Porri - "With zee plethora of new shows on the TV these days, who do so many peeps create complex home NAS set ups .."
So that you set up 'your own' 'TV' station. (without the screaming adverts)
I've probably watched Terminator 2 about a half a dozen times in my life. ...I will again when I go thru the 'series'. fyi
And what I have realized, even tho I remember a 'few' scenes of something, I 'forget most of the 'story'
I'm at about 3yrs right now. I can watch something, enjoy it, and go back and watch it again in about 3 years and enjoy it again.
I suspect as dementia sets in, I should be able to go back in shorter and shorter periods and do this, hehe
Ton - 'hoarding'
Agreed, some hoard. But I have a motive/purpose.
Hoarding is a 'house full of stuff you never look at'. I am now at the point I rewatch enough of the collection it is all 'new' to me because of the 'forgetting factor'.
Currently going thru QI for 3rd time, Family Guy for 2nd time, Simpsons (never can remember enough to be bored of), Tosh.0 for 3rd time, Star Treks been watched about 6x. By the time I go thu ST-original and get to the current ST-Discovery I can start again, PBS-Nova and BBC-Horizon, Hstry-Chnl-Modern Marvels to no end, learning docs-like The Mechanic Universe by Cal. Tech currently going thru, etc. etc.... I'll never watch it all, but I also will never run out of options.
All fit in a 10yr old PC and running off a 1GB stick. (vrs what you may pay for cable...)
And from what I do get on TV from an antenna, I'm much happier watching something 'good' compared to the 'crap' they seem to broadcast nowadays.
Now, going to try firing up the old PC as I see Porri, Ton, Bacon and Hoff on the server... =Perfect storm, hehe fingers crossed

Well, I tried the old PC. Unfortunately Microsoft feels it's more important I get all the crap it wants to dl to me as opposed to me using MY PC to do what I WANT. :/
Jammed with downloads since being off for so long. Tried a game booster but still ghosted apps hogging CPU/bandwidth to make it unusable.
So I'll have to reformat and set it up again to be playable I suspect. :/ I'll put on my 'todo list'.
Nice to see the old QAWS/regs again. Once I get reformat done I'll try again. Take care dudes...

Yeah I had a few years without any TV, it's not that it's really that bad per see, but I enjoy having TV now though, and I still download more than ever since there's just so much content from all over the place. I actually lowered my Comcast bill since this thread was created with no change in service and probably downloaded at least 300gb more worth of movies/tv shows/music. I think I get a bit more out of my cable service than the average user!
Good seeing you on the server! For the old PC maybe you could try putting together a custom installer to weed out the stuff you don't want and sideload the drivers and things you might need.

I suspect as dementia sets in, I should be able to go back in shorter and shorter periods and do this, hehe I agree with the dementia comment. Lately, I've watched some movies in its entirety, only to realize later that I had probably watched them before.

Looks like I'll be in the market for another TV now ... maybe when Christmas rolls around ... after many years of trusty service my 50" panasonic plasma got fried by a lightning strike yesterday ... even the surge protector could not save it :-( Guess I am in the market for a new surge protector while I'm at it, think that's probably toast as well ... I'm hoping the receiver is okay, I think it is but it's hard to tell without a TV to hook it up to. Also fried my cable modem in a different room -_______- All in all it was a pretty shitty day filled with lightning and misery.

You may be able to file a claim and get a free tv! -V-

Hehe I think I'll save my claim filings for more appropriate scenarios than a busted TV :-P

Thanks, those TCL TV's have been pretty decently reviewed for the price when I've looked at them in the past ... don't have the money to replace the TV right now, but maybe next month there will be a similar deal. I do have to make sure to find one that is compatible with the wall mount I have, I assume there is some standard but I can't remember what exactly all the specs for the mount are. I think the manual might be towards the top in my box o' manuals though.

I know Hoff has been anxiously awaiting TV updates, so I'm glad to say that I have a new TV arriving in the next week or so!

I hope that TV is smart.
The alternative, a dumb TV, doesn’t sound as appealing.

Its got all the latest buzzwords, smart, 4k, uhd, etc. With my luck I'm sure it will fall off the wall or something an hour after mounting.

TT recently bought a new 65 inch 4K TV. He runs his ET highlights on a 16 hour loop, and my goodness, he looks so good.

Woo got the new TV up on the wall, it looks pretty nice! This also allowed me to confirm that my receiver was also damaged by the lightening, so that will be going to the dump along with the old TV Guess I will try to be replacing the receiver next since I already have all the speakers sitting there ready to be connected.

Three cheers for Sony, apparently they will fix my receiver at no cost to me. It's a Christmas miracle!
