Weird... I've never read a book 'cause a teacher told me to lol Every book I've ever read was because either I found it on my grandfather's library or some nice friend of mine recommended it. The first 3 are TEH books man. You should go find Demian at least Perfume is a great novel. Love the descriptions and the main character motivations. Which ones are those that teachers make u read in highschool? I don't live in teh US so I have no idea what you're talking about

in high school english class, some jr high school as well, students are often given a list of books they should read
during the semester, often you have to write a book report on some of them sometimes, everyone has to read the same book, and then get quizzed on em and write essays on em
books like those by charles dickens - bleak house, tale of 2 cities, etc or huckleberry finn, scarlet letter, brave new world, 1984, animal farm, (maybe) farenheit, maybe jane eyre, wuthering heights, cantebury tales, catcher in the rye, great gatsby, of mice and men
mostly 'heavy' literature
most students don't actually read the books, using cliff's notes or having a friend write the essay instead
i heard some english teachers have used lord of the rings in their classes, which i think woulda been awesome (i was never given that option)

I understood the "objective", but didn't know which books you guys read in the US I don't know, but if some teacher tells me I MUST read a book (even LOTR) it would have lost all of its appeal for me. I hate reading for obligation. Reading is a pleasure And yeah, Pillars of the earth is a wonderful book. I think I read it all in like 4-6 days. I just couldn't stop reading and sometimes I even read some parts like 3-4 times while I was at it! amazing really

almost every book ive read in high school sucked, except animal farm, f451, and lord of the flies.
i swear ive read at least 10 holocaust books and 2 books on the victims of nukes in japan (intense discriptions of ppls skin falling off, VERY NICE), why dont they pick they greatest books ever and make you read those.... then english classes be so much easier.

"Read the first Dune book, got lost in the others" < Agreed
Dune is good though~ LOTR/Hobbit Silmarillion (spelling?) is cool, but very complicated..
The Illuminatus! Trilogy (the ! is supposed to be there) was cool, very trippy

Of mice and men is a very good book....any of you ever read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen? I have! That was a pretty cool book, i love those kind of books of survival and just getting on by. Indian in the Cupboard was a pretty cool one like Hatchet, along with its sequels. Nobody here has mentioned Shakespeare? Swear he could have been mentioned at least once. Personally, i am not a huge fan, but i thought someone might x] I admit his work is good, but not at the top But thats just from reading only 2 of his works Merchant of Venice and Midsummer Night's Dream And those were read at school Well to list my favourite books would be kinda hard for me, recently gone on a big reading spree, just changing genres every now and then Some of the ones i really liked were Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk Invisible Monsters - Chuck Palahniuk The Stand - Stephen King (Definitely. The uncut edition btw) Gene - Stel Pavlou Trinity Trilogy - Fiona Mcintosh (kinda different from everything else here, but it was an old favourite ) and also a few short stories from Haunted - Chuck P I've read animal farm and that was also a darn good book along with all the LOTR books (which i ahve yet to complete properly :S) and dam this thread is good for finidng new books

Oh man! I totally forgot about the Indian in the Cupboard. I loved that book.
I have read a bunch of Shakespeare, all of it for school though. Its good stuff but I can't say its my favorite. Maybe the Taming of the Shrew, that was a great one.

Mine:
The Grapes of Wrath - Steinbeck The Count of Monte Cristo (unabridged) - Dumas Tortilla Flat - Steinbeck The Rum Diaries - Thompson On the Road - Kerouac The Redwall Series(when I was a kid, but nevertheless very good books) - Jacques
The Count of Monte Cristo was really hard to put down for me, I'm talking like 3 in morning and still reading, one of the most enjoyable reads to date. I really don't know why I like Kerouac because he pretty much just rambles on his experiences and doesn't really elaborate, and for that matter, so does Thompson, but they both strike a chord with me.

Of Mice And Men is ace. Currently blasting through Homer's Iliad, for once "epic" really is the appropriate word, it's so badass.

I love Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and Steppenwolf.
Recently I read Patrick Suskind's Perfume and Tess Gerritsen's Mephisto Club. The book I enjoyed the most lately was Julia Navarro's Sindone Complot (I have no idea if there's an English translation).
