I have heard a lot of people get turned off by the first book and stop reading halfway through, a whole lot. I think its because the first book is the most child oriented one of the series and also, lets not forget, it is JKR's first attempt at writing. By the time you are done with that first book though you can tell there is something more to it than just a children's tale. The whole series progresses like that. I've heard a lot of people complaining that the books have gotten too dark for children, and I must agree I would hesitate to let a child read either of the last two, but I think calling it a children's book and leaving it at that does not do the series justice. It started out as a kids story that could get the attention of older readers but then with each new book the series itself aged just as much as the characters, and its original audience. It is also for that reason that so many adults find the story so engaging, an appreciation and understanding of the progression from childhood to adulthood. I think that quality, more than anything else, is why the series has attracted to many people.
