Anyone plan on watching the premiere episode tonight? I've read the comic books and really enjoyed them as well as other stuff by the author so hoping the show turns out well. I think the reviews were all pretty favorable from people who've seen the first episode already.

Didn't notice this thread. Let me start by saying that Teh Preacher is without a doubt, THE best graphic novel I have ever read. I've always thought that this material could've been made into a great TV series, but highly doubted anyone would do it, due to the highly controversial nature of the story (coupled with teh extreme violence). So, when I learned that this was finally going to be made into a TV series, I was excited. Altho' the excitement was slightly tempered when I realized who was behind producing this show. <start rant> Ugh. I wished this show would have been picked up by HBO, Netflix etc., with a decent production budget (and have the creators of Daredevil or Fargo work on it). Instead the unfunny, juvenile, no-talent, dick with ears, aka Seth Rogen, is running things with what is visibly a tighter budget. Stayed up late to watch this when it aired, and I found myself getting agitated with the show. Now, granted I'm a fanboy ... . and that could've had a lot to do with it - esp. since the show's got some decent reviews on IMDb. They've already strayed from the graphic novel right from the get go. And the casting is a head scratcher. The lead character in the novel is a bad ass (he's tall and rough). Instead they've got this short, puny, pretty boy with a whiny voice leading the show. Can't we find some talented actors from the deep south with real southern accents, instead of reaching elsewhere and teaching some one how to speak Texan? Also, couldn't they just leave the timeline to the late 80s/early 90s instead of bringing everything current - and whining about Starbucks, smashing iPads to bits, etc. I don't know. It just felt boring, and the acting looked strange. Some parts in the book, esp. regarding Cassidy are brought along nicely. Here, it's just thrown at your face, right off the bat. Whaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Whaaaaaa!!! <\end rant> Ok. That was cathartic. I feel better now, I think. Imma still watch the next few episodes and hope for a turnaround. Actually, I'm curious about the unbiased non-fanboy takes. It's probably better not knowing the background to this show.

I think I kind of went into it knowing that it would not be able to replicate all the stuff from the comic, especially being on AMC instead of an HBO or the like. I didn't mind the casting though based on the one episode thought everybody seemed right enough.
While I was watching though I was wondering what on earth people not familiar with it at all going into it might think of it though. Like you said the story is a bit crammed together and I pictured a casual viewer tuning in just wondering what the F was going on.
Overall I try not to be very nit-picky when it comes to adaptations of things and just try to judge it on its own. With that in mind I definitely enjoyed it enough to continue watching.
Also I was surprised at some of the violence they could get away with ... never sure with regular cable shows how much they can get away with.

Ok - so I watched the series premiere again - and this time went in with an open mindset.
I liked it (understanding that they've changed the story around). Some of it felt like it was (very loosely) taken from Book 7 - Salvation.
Reading the graphic novels again. Did done them, 5 out of 9 so far.
Just remembered how great of a graphic novel series this is. Just mind blowing!! Also I just can't imagine many parts of the story making it into the series. They have to adapt big time.

Ok - spoiler alert (for the 2 people who watch this show). I was stoked when they introduced Teh Saint of Killers, on the first scene. Awwww yeaaah! Altho' that scene was from book 4. They also introduced the butcher from book 7. Anyway, looking at the pace that they're moving at, they could easily do 6-7 seasons, if this show is successful.

Still surprised at some of the violence they get away with nowadays, maybe I don't watch as much stuff on regular networks as opposed to the premium networks but seems like people must not be so nuts about what they show on TV as much as they used to.
Not a whole lot to comment on with it being only two episodes in and all, but as TV shows go I'm entertained which is a plus.
So as to keep up with the comic book side of this riveting discussion we've got going on I've just 'bought' the whole series, and since I've little else to do all day I should be finished reading them in their entirety in a day or two. I'm pretty sure I have it loaded on a tablet somewhere but can't be bothered to find it and a plug so the download will finish before I hit 'post reply'
Also inspired to now rebuild my once vast library of scanned-in comic books or graphic novels or whatever, I used to have so many. My physical hard-back five volume Sandman collection will always be dear to my heart though.

I've heard good things about Sandman, and might purchase it.
As far as hardcovers go, I own the known favs like Preacher, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc.
Regarding this show again, it appears that this entire season is going to be based in Annville, TX, which is a major departure from the books regarding the preacher being always on the move. Not a big deal, but it was essentially a chase for the Saint of Killers etc., regarding finding the preacher. I'm not sure how they're going to adapt that, given that he's static. Probably the reason that they're slowly introducing the characters.
Maybe next season onwards he'll leave Annville and travel around to SF, AZ, Paris etc.

They should prolly just rename Preacher to something else - and continue on with their skulduggery.
The story line at this point, is completely different.
We'll see.

I mean, graphic novel collection. I didn't buy the expensive 5-part collectors edition. Ended up with the 10 part set.

It's probably for the best you got the 10 part set ... the big 5 part set is too nice to actually open and read it When I want to read it again I'll probably go start to finish using the physical books but as it stands I've only admired them briefly while my read-throughs have been in digital form. There should be a whole thread dedicated to comics, but maybe we'd be the only ones to post in it

Lol true.
And speaking of nerdy hobbies, I considered creating a 'board game' thread once. But then realized that Aelf and I would've been the only ones to post in that.

I don't get to play board games very often since I live alone and have only pets for friends, but Catan, Ticket to Ride, Dominion are some good ones I've played. I might have played Agricola before or I at least bought it for my brother one year, I'd have to see it to remember if I've played.
I actually was also thinking of creating a board game thread ... was trying to figure out if there was some online version of a good board game that we might be able to get a game going sometime if anyone was interested.

Apparently, I did create a board game thread, around 6 yrs ago. This was around the time I lived in FL, and we had weekly board game nights (with craft brews etc.). I believe I had also joined a board game meetup group around that time. Lulz. That's where I played Agricola. For the past 6 yrs in NJ, my games have been collecting a healthy dose of dust. I did join a meetup group around here, but folks around Princeton are a little too hardcore when it comes to competitive nerdy stuff.

Ok, so season 2 started a few weeks ago.
I watched the first 2 episodes today and I liked them. This season starts where the graphic novel starts off. And even though they've changed a few things here and there, it feels true to the general theme. Rogen and co. must've taken the negative reviews constructively - since this is the preacher that should satisfy the fanboys.
Season 1 felt like a soap opera and was prolly a prologue to the main story.
The Saint of Killers is a bad ass. V57.

You're only one episode behind, you should have powered through and watched the 3rd one . I liked Season 1, am not a fanboy, and would also argue that season 1 was pretty much required for the show to progress with the TV audience understanding the whole premise. I don't really remember what happens in the comics so each week is pretty much new to me story wise. Kind of want to fire up the ol iPad and re-read everything though.

After the second episode I noticed that y'all were on the server, and wanted to get in on the action before Hoff left for his third shower of the evening.

The latest episode seems like one that might offend some people and probably represents one of the issues i imagine came up with adapting the comic to an AMC show ...as such I really liked it though and have been enjoying what feels to me like a bit more of a comic absurdity this season compared to the first.

So, I binge watched 4-5 episodes recently (I might be at the 7th episode). I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised by this season. It is not like the comic books (my initial gripe) - but that's fine - since the writing this season has been better. You can already see a new (maybe?) cast of writers and directors. My only issue was the storyline in the last episode with the Saint of Killers. The SOK bows to NO ONE! He's a true badass - and giving him 1% of the preacher's soul was cheesy AF. I mean, in the comics, the Devil was terrified of this dude! And he finally killed the Devil.
Looks like they're really setting up the Preacher to be a soulless badass instead.

Late to the party here, but Preacher is my all time favorite graphic novel and after watching the whole first season my impression was that they basically wrote an entirely different story and just gave everyone the same names as in Preacher. As an adaptation I think its awful. If I had never read the commics I might have enjoyed it more... my 2 cents.
