Hi guys.
After years suffering suddent ping raises (infact i'm known for that ), I think I've finally realized the problem, and wanted to share it with you.
But first, i've to explain exactly what was the main problem: I didn't suffer normal conncetion slowdowns. My ping uses to raise suddently to 4000-6000 (ET digit limit is 999, but it accutally reaches several thousands according to other measurements), and then after seconds or minutes, it resotres suddently to 150-225 (if someone other is streaming..etc.). That's not normal. Infact, all the methodes like "dont let anybody else use internet, adjust rate, delete processes etc." didnt worked.
After many years of researches, i've finally found out what was the problem: channel interference. All Wi-Fi's work on different channels between 1 and 11. And Wi-Fi's that works in the same channel, or in a close one (1 is close to 2, 7 is close to 8 etc.), do interfere with eachother. The ammout of interference varies in the time, depending from some factors. But old router suffer interference much more than newer ones.
My modem is a 6 years old, infact it gets hot very easly, and i found that it was working on channel 9, shared with 7 other Wi-Fi's! That's no good, especially with my old modem. So after looking to the graph (showed by a software that i will share later) i realized that channel 1 was the less populated one (1-3 wifis sharing it), so i moved my conncetion to it. I expreienced a more stable conncetion, also with ET. Lag spikes were much less frequent, and did last only few seconds. But they were still there, cuz the 2 other conncetions sharing that channel with me, sometimes interferces greater with my one. But ofc, 2 conncetions are better than 7.
I dont know you, but there are like 16 strong wifi's in my appartement builing that my pc detects. It's a big number, and interference is very high.
Also, these days, in my building new Wi-Fi keeps appearing.
The best solution, i think, is to buy a good strong router, so it won't suffer interference that much.
To see what channel i was using, and which ones were less populated i used free software "InSSIDer Home" (http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html). It shows a graph like this:
The blue one is the selected one, and it's my Wi-Fi. The numbers below are the channels. As you can see, right now, there's only one conncetion sharing it with me. All the other channels, are very pouplated.
Once you've found the best channel via InSSIDer, you have to move your conncetion to it. InSSIDer can't do that. A basic tutorial is here: support.metageek.com/hc/en-us/articles/200970664-Change-the-Channel-on-Your-Wireless-Router
So guys, if you suffer big and suddent lag spikes, that restores after seconds or minutes the reasone can be that in that period of time a conncetion is interfering with yours. First, change channel (maybe you have more empty channels, unlike me), if you still sufer lag problems, buy a better and stronger router. Don't let it get hot (unless it will suffer more the interfernce).
Cheers.
Edit: there are few people having this problem, because most of you now have a good router , or there's much less population unlike me.
Edit 2: you see? Now there are 4 conncetion sharing with me. That new connection ("Wi-Fi3") appeared this morning, but then went away. Now it has reappeard.
When i'll have some money i'll buy a good modem.
Cya.
