I like playing engineer - I do. I like building stuff. I like repairing stuff. I like blowing stuff up. I like making minefields. I could go on about minefields but I'll save that for another thread. This thread is about the level 4 perk for the engineer, the flak jacket - 50% damage from explosive ordnance (mines, dyno, grenades, and arty) - and how to get it quicker.
When I first started playing ET, I'd wrench the first build box I saw to 100%, then move to the next construct-able. It took forever to get to lvl4. Add multiple engineers to the team (all trying to build the same things), and it was impossible to get XP. Then at some point, I realized I was doing it all wrong and adjusted my build habits. Now I can XP up faster, getting the coveted flak jacket sooner.
The 'trick' is to wrench a 'build box' until it's 80% done. Then leave it. When the ghost image of the construct-able disappears, go back and re-build to 80%. You can re-build the same structure over and over and over without completion, accruing XP with every turn of your wrench.
CAVEAT: Every construct-able for the direct support of the team objective (CPs, barriers, bridges, ramps) should be built to 100%. Team play MUST come first. XP whoring second. Ancillary things, like mg emplacements, are good ones to partially build.
After leveling up my character, I try to NOT build anything, so other less XP'ed engineers have the opportunity to get THEIR flak jackets. Hopefully this small tip will be useful for other engineers, struggling to get their XP. All comments, critiques, suggestions, etc are welcome!

I'm the guy that just comes in and finishes up anything that needs building no matter how far along it is, ruining your chances to build XP quickly.

If time permits I build an mg gun then destroy it with nades so I can rebuild said mg gun, but I also second that team play IMO must come first.

You can also build the cp in Goldrush over and over again while an axis covy destroys it. It doesn't move the tank but you can get a lot of xp.

Do you get Light Weapons XP for destroying it? Nope, no xp for destroying since it's not objective-based. As someone who used to exclusively play Eng, I now try to get to Lvl.4 asap, then only play eng when needed. I pretty much do what you do. It's nice when there's a map with a box on the way to Obj, such as the first allied mg on Dump -- build it mostly then move the tank, then do the same every time you die. Just gotta hope no one else Ton doesn't build it. You probably know this, but Gold is the XP-whoring paradise if you're by yourself. You can build everything but Meds as high as you want w/ tank and truck. I find that doing so takes some of the meat out of my fight though, as there aren't any more levels to fight for as the server gets busier. But if you don't play other classes much, its a good way to see all the perks of all the classes. I'm often 'guilty' of building Soldier and Fops to Lvl1 though, as both are THE WORST to play as Lvl.0 - uggh. Whore on my friend!

Just want to pass on useful info in the hopes that I can (1) help others and (2) learn something...and I am. Didn't know I could damage something I built (the mg nest). Didn't know TON would XP-block (lol). -V-

Kamikaze engie reporting for duty The ONLY way. Can't be an Eng and worry about ratio! v77 Guilty. I get the whole 'let's stand outside the gold room and toss 'nades.' But someone needs to rush into the teeth of the defenders before they all respawn and get the party started. I just buy my flak jacket of the black market from this guy called lurch or lunch (or something like that).
He usually has a bunch of them in this trench coat.
Caveat: he doesn't wear pants. Lost them to a covie years ago.
