Saw this film a week ago and figured I'd make a thread. I thought overall it was very good. It's satisfying to see Mel Gibson's return as a director succeed. No matter what personal life problems he had there's no denying he has a good vision.
To continue on that, I have to bring up the first battle scene. It is probably the best battle scene I've seen since the Omaha Beach scene from Saving Private Ryan. It was intense, gritty, and haunting: and I loved every second if it from an artistic perspective. It was so beautifully shot and I was engrossed. A director who can make you want to see every second of a battle scene is doing something right.
While I do think it drags a little in the first half, it was overall a great film. Andrew Garfield gave a wonderful performance and I enjoyed seeing him in a dramatic role. And I'm glad it's Oscar season. I've seen people say more than once that movies this year have been sort of a let down.

I was going to mention this in the war movies thread but I see you already covered it I actually watched this one a few weeks ago, thought it was really well done. I didn't really find anything particularly compelling about any of the acting (not that it was bad or anything), but it was definitely a fantastic war movie and a great story to be told. Oh yeah and I saw it's on HBO currently for anyone who has it and wants to watch ... I caught a portion of it yesterday and was reminded of the war movies thread (and then this one).

Eh, while I have a thread here about it it's not exactly an in depth review. But yeah, it's one of the best World War II films to come out in a while.
And I might have overrated Garfield's performance a little. It just excites me when I see actors trying different genres that you wouldn't expect, especially when more comedic actors show what they're capable of in something more dramatic. I was glad to see that Garfield didn't get stuck as Spider-Man for the rest of his life. And I thought Vince Vaughn did a find job.
Some other examples include Steve Carrell in Foxcatcher and The Big Short, Hugh Jackman in Prisoners (you mentioned this already), Johnny Depp in Black Mass, or Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting (though I understand he was trained as a Shakespearian actor, so he had drama experience).
