Hi gang,
I have been playing ET on my HP Pavillion a1410n desktop computer. I have added a PCI-E graphics card and upgraded RAM to the 4 GB max. I am only getting about 24 FPS. I used the ET Ultimate Installer 1.6 to try to optimize but you see what it gave me. Space gave me some suggestions that we tried and the FPS bounces around. I do have an SSD I could probably throw in. Any more suggestions??
System:
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.4 GHz NVIDIA Geforce GT 610 Samsung SP2400C SCSI Disk
So, I wasn't too far off with the Etch-A-Sketch picture for my rig. Getting anything new is out of the question for the time being.
Thank you,
Tor \V/ Live Long and Prosper

Oh man... it's weird... my laptop Inspiron 3000 is about the same specifications, and despite the abvious ping-lag, I get between 60 and 100 FPS (I do get 40 or 30 sometimes though)... Couldn't it be something hardware related? Is your desktop old? I don't know, just thought I'd share this info so you can make the comparison or someone else could.

I'm guessing you tried the r_primitives thing? I see that people recommend that all the time when someone says their framerate is low ... I forget the exact command though and what number you're supposed to try setting it to, r_primitives 2 maybe?! set r_primitives 2 ? I dunno something like that. Also could maybe try changing wolfenstein to run in compatibility mode for XP if you're not already on XP? Doesn't seem like your machine would have any problems running the game so I bet there is just some setting that needs to be tweaked ... I'm sure one of us here can come up with it eventually!

Wait! I'm not totally sure, but you might get kicked for using r_primitives' wrong value in game (although you can use it for catching hacks in a demo)... I think what Ton wanted to recommend is something like /com_maxfps {value}? I'm not an expert, but I think that if you set your maxfps to a lower value than your pc is supposed to give, you somehow force the server and your pc to give its maximum performance.

You would get kicked if you set it to some crazy value other than what Ton tells you to set it to

PS: just DON'T set /r_primitives 1

As far as I remember 1 is an acceptable value for that command, maybe it looks funky or something but I don't think it would kick you out of the game.
The other command hoff mentioned is : /seta com_maxfps (I think using the seta commits the value or something so you don't have to set it every time you join?, i dunno)
I think 125 is a typical high end value to try with maxfps.

I set r_primitives to 2 and am now running in XP compatibility mode. Still around 24. Maxfps is 100.
Thanks for suggestions.

I do see from googling that people say to use the command "/vid_restart" after doing the commands, I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not? Anyways here are some other things that seem to be related to FPS ... you could back up your etconfig file just in case, though since your FPS is already low maybe it won't matter if you back it up (ignore the // stuff those are just comments from whoever wrote this) seta com_hunkmegs "512" //zugeordnetspeicher512// seta com_soundMegs "128" //Bitrate für den Sound// seta com_maxfps "120" // Maximale Anzahl (135) der Frames/sec seta forcefps "120" //Standard 100 seta com_crashed "0" seta com_zoneMegs "128" Just to be part of the team I am going to also try setting my game to these values to see what happens! EDIT: I have set my game to these values, and it did not seem to break it. I assume I will be playing way better now! PS: I think you do need to do the vid restart command to see the effects of the commands.

First is this a new video card, and your using your old ET Config settings?? Did your old config settings use to work fine for you with no FPS problems ?? If yes to both of those then I would guess you have a video card setting that is bad. The NVIDIA Control Panel already has individual profiles for most games, including ET. You should pick it and see if it helps. It will load default settings for the Video card for this game.
Check for things like vertical sync is set to force off. *THIS* is usually a big problem in this game. Anisotropic Filtering (AF) will also need to be set in the control panel.
Did you download a new driver for this card? If it is the newest and still you have problems you might have to roll back to one of their older nvidia drivers. Nvidia is hardly backwards compatible no matter what they say. Also in game check what video mode the game is putting you into now, this can also cause this kind of issue ( you can force a mode in a config if you so desire).
If your config has always had low FPS then
/cg_atmosphericeffects 0 /cg_wolfparticles 0 /cg_muzzleflash 0
Make the game look as bad as you can get it, and then start to add back the quality till you find a value that seems to lag your fps out, no shadow, low quality turn OFF Blood flash and Blood splatter etc.....

Yep. Took him through most of these items. Tor, your hardware I'm pretty sure is better than mine and I have no issues at all. Something is amiss. What OS? I know some have had issues with newer OS'. I use XP (4 ever <3). Will com_maxfps show the current value when you don't add one at the end? (Not at PC now). If so, I'd like to know what this reads for you, just as a sanity check.
I will send you my ET exe shortcut Target Info tmrw. It launches ET with my res, hunkmegs, hax etc set to my liking upon launch. Just need to vid_restart once launched. I doubt this will help.
Let me know what that \com_maxfps property reads.
I think this should be fixable. Your hardware itself is capable.

Have you run the task manager? I'm coming into this thread late, but my gut tells me you've got antivirus software or virtual CDROM mounting software or something else running in the background and that 'something' is hogging your CPU/RAM... Stepping back, did this machine (and ET) 'run good' in the past and then start 'running bad?' If that answer is 'yes,' did 'something' change? It could be software you installed or hardware you installed... You mentioned having a spare SSD...being a lazy engineer, I'd slap that SSD in, insert ye ole XP CD, and install a fresh OS. The SCSI drive would be my data drive... -V-

Yeah, I'm curious about what the Task Manager reads (under the Performance tab) also, both when you're on your desktop with nothing extra running (after fresh startup), and also when you have ET running. If your CPU Usage isn't too high in either case, then this almost HAS to be a GPU or settings issue. Also, if you don't mind divulging, I wouldn't mind seeing what you have running after a fresh startup. (Task Manager > Processes).
Also, this my ET shortcut Target info. Feel free to use any of it if you'd like, just need to change the path to match your actual ET install location obviously
"C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe" +r_mode "-1" +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +cg_fov "104" +set com_hunkmegs "768" +set com_zoneMegs "32" +vid_restart +connect 74.91.113.86:27960 +vid_res

Also, does Youtube, Netflix, whatever chug or have have issues when you watch videos or do anything that's "graphics intensive"?

Ok, I have done a lot of whats been suggested with no avail. I checked CPU usage and it is at 100 percent with nothing going on. I have no antivirus on this computer. Pretty much only use it for ET. The biggest culprit is a svchost(netsvcs) service. It takes up 90+ percent usage. Is there a way to turn this off or restrict usage. It is probably the problem.
I went to the new card because the on board 6150 LE was giving me the same FPS. So I have always had the problem regardless of vid card. I hoped switching to the GT 610 with on board memory would work better.
Thanks again for everything,
Tor

If your having that much cpu taken up with the host services, you probly need to try a couple of things, I usually try safe mode to see if the machine runs "faster" with out loading all the crap that windows loads, if it does run "faster" i then boot normal and check first for viruses, ( bleepingcomputer.com is your friend here download rkill,, malewarebytes(trial),, adwcleaner run rkill first then adwcleaner, and then malewarebytes (trial ) and follow all directions including rebooting ) after you are up and running check task manager again and look at the cpu usage again.
if cpu usage is high or still at 100% check to make sure that the svchost is also located in Windows/system32 if any process is not in that dir stop the process of that one service it is NOT a windows service. when you do this check to see if your cpu usage comes down or levels out to something in the 1-3% range, if you system has been up for a bit and your using more then this you still have process that probly don't need to run, try disabling any thing not eseential to windows, like printer driver downloads, adobee crap, any thing that wants to run to look for new downloads gforece is one to do this also, Also check your startup programs and maybe disable some of those that windows does not need, If your not sure just cut and past or post a pic of your task manager for us to look at.

You should be good to go after that. If you're curious about svchost.exe, here is a good tutorial on how to 'dig down' and 'see' which program is the culprit. You can manually stop the errant process, but eliminating it is a better option. www.wintips.org/how-to-fix-svchost-exe-netsvcs-memory-leak-or-high-cpu-usage-problems/-V-

Thank you My Wolf family. Through all of your efforts and suggestions we finally hit upon my problem.
Turns out my cpu usage was at 100 percent all of the time. When I went through and started turning off services and got my usage down to below 5 percent on continuous basis, my FPS when up from 24 to 60-100.
Again, thank you so much for the help!! I will post back here when I find the information online on what services need to be turned off.
You are the GREATEST,
Tor

Awesome! There's a bunch of sites out there that will tell you what normal microsoft services are essential / recommended / not really needed / etc ... if you're looking through the list of services and see some funky ones that you don't see mentioned in the usual "what services to turn off" sites, you could google its name to see what it actually is. It could just be some service for a USB device or some other thing you've installed , but always best to make sure it's not some malicious service if you can't tell what it might be by the name or whatever.
Enjoy your revived framerate!!

Also, I just noticed that when I don't plug my laptop alimentation, I got 30 FPS stable, then I plug the alimentation, I got 125. Seems that some alimentation settings influence the CPU power (which is ok!). It might help someone one day
