If you're going to play games these days, you do need to grab Steam.
There's lots of demos there to keep entertained on, or put on wishlist and wait for the price that works for you.
I've got the new Doom, New Wolf Collosus, Truck Sim USA, Sid Meiers Civ, and a few more demos.
I get a kick out of the truck sim. My goal is to make the trip at full speed!! hehe hilarious
demos can be fun.
And at times they will put up completely free new games for download. (real free, not the 'free to play' with buys in game)
And there are also free games. Indie stuff a lot of it. I've grabbed a couple; "A Story about my Uncle", was free, an RPG. I haven't got into that yet except for a peek, looks good. And "Age of Fear: The Free World", an adventure RPG, free indie game. A few in game nags so far. It reminds me of an updated version of Dark Sun (I/II) from 30yrs ago.
So Steam is worth the download, plenty there to keep one entertained for free. I've been on it a couple of months, yet to spend any $$, about a dozen things on wishlist I'll watch for.
If I'm not playing ET right now, or bombing down the hwy at 80mph in a sim truck, I'm playing Total War:Napoleon.
To jump from Warcraft3 to Total War:Napoleon was 'jaw dropping'.. Very kewl battles. Setting up a front line of cannons to make cannon-fodder of the approaching enemy. So kewl to zoom in and see in 3D a cannon ball go through a troop, men tossed in the air, hehe The first time I watched a battle, the first hit I went "Oh!!, that gotta hurt.."
What I see on Steam that is VR content has me quite interested in a VR setup. I think the VR stuff is gonna start coming 'fast' in the next few years. A 'nice' VR setup runs about $1000 - $1800 now, usually get some media with it, but then you also need to pay for VR content. Too pricey yet for my blood. :/
