Cowboy asked me a question this morning about my settings. I know there are bits and pieces scattered around the site, but I thought I'd post my setup to maybe help others with theirs. I may VERY well forget some stuff (hello mimosa), but I'll do my best.
I would love to hear what other people do, and I'd ask that you be specific with exact settings or commands. Obviously, our respective machines offer different results, so nothing will be a sure improvement. I'll try to go in order of what to do to copy my setup. I'll likely edit this thing so many times.
- If you dont use a Shortcut for your ET.exe (to launch game), make one. -- go to Properties on that shortcut. ---The TARGET section should have the location of your original exe. after that section, paste this into it:
+r_mode "-1" +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +cg_fov "104" +set com_hunkmegs "768" +vid_restart +connect 74.91.113.86:27960
So MY TARGET looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\Wolf ET\NEW\ET HD - NOT Pimp.exe" +r_mode "-1" +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +cg_fov "104" +set com_hunkmegs "768" +vid_restart +connect 74.91.113.86:27960
You may want to change the values of your width and height. I use "HD" res with EVERYTHING else else turned down (as far as I know), but use whats best for you. This shortcut is an easy way to launch the game with some settings plugged in. Despite the vid_restart in there, ALWAYS do a manual \vid_restart in the console once you're in-game. You may want to play with the cg_fov number too... I like 104
My in-game settings are as follows (except for hax stuff which I wont bring up here):
In your Game menu (Esc) go to Options > View: -Ejecting Brass: Off -Low Quality Sky: Yes (lowers FPS for me by several FPS) -Corona Distance: Off -Particles: No -Atmospheric Effects: No (turns off rain on RADAR and snow on RAIL, maybe more) -Wallmark: Normal for me, but I dont think this matters much -Blood Flash: None -Blood Splatter: None
In your Game menu (Esc) go to Options > System: -Video Quality and Resolution show 'Custom' due to .exe Shortcut target info -Color Depth: 16 -Fullscreen: Yes -Geometric Detail: Medium (you MIGHT get better performance with LOW, but i thot medium was better, so circles dont look like octogons) -Texture Detail: Low -Texture Quality: 16 -Texture Filter: Bilinear -Detailed Textures: HELL No -Depth Buffer: 24 -Compress: No -Sync: No -Dynamic: Disabled -GL: Enabled ________________________________________________
If you have a decent video card, make sure to up your maxfps. The default is lower than you might want. In the console, I do this: \com_maxfps 125
If you have an amazing video card, you can up that value to whatever works. I found that if I dont have an FPS limit, and it goes above roughly 320, the game will SHARPLY lag like it cant handle it. That could just be my setup. ________________________________________________ This part is more for people with a consistent internet connection. May help others though too...
Turn on your lagometer, in the console: \cg_lagometer 1 ****Notice any peaks and troughs in the green part
Something I noticed a few years ago was that if I set my com_maxfps too 100, AND my cl_maxpackets to 100, I got a very level and smooth connection in my lagometer and a very consistent, unchanging 98 ping. The cost is that you're always at your highest possible ping (again, highest IF you have a consistent connection [sorry Hoffman and Bill]). Highest ping sounds shitty, but if it's consistent, then you dont need to worry much about changes in timing due to lag changes. I found this useful, but I'm not sure if my number will work for everyone. I'm currently using:
\cl_maxpackets 35 \com_maxfps 125
I dont get the smoothness I described with these numbers, but I found that it lowered my ping, and didn't make my ping wobble toooo much. In the end, just play with these numbers a bit and find what you're comfortable with. Lower, wobbly ping might be better than consistent, higher ping. _______________________________________ If you dont know this, then you will now! You can turn off the up/down, side-to-side movement while you walk. You had better use the following commands:
\cg_bobyaw 0 \cg_bobroll 0 \cg_bobpitch 0 \cg_bobup 0 _______________________________________ Anytime you change any of these settings, always do a \vid_restart afterward as some of these wont take effect until you do _______________________________________ My vital stats are these, and no i'm not lovingly patting myself on the back, just info: Intel Core 2 Duo Dual core 2.66Ghz 2 Gigs o' RAM Video Card: Nvidia GT 610 (2 gigs of mem) It's my 8yo work computer, nothing special. _______________________________________
I'll add stuff as I said, I'm probably forgetting some obvious settings.
I'd like to hear if any of this helped, what works best for you, and any additional tips you might have.
Cheersburp

A lot of these I already used. Haven't tried pasting that biz into the shortcut or turning off the bob... One interesting thing is that after my maxfps being set at 90 for years and years I recently tried to Max it out and see what my machine could handle. I found that if I set \com_maxfps above 303 my system freaks out but setting it AT 303 actually gives me 333 fps and playing at that has given me an average +5% accuracy o.O

Everyone should seriously do that right now. Agreed about the 300+ fps lag. Even with the most amazing vid card, I'd limit \com_maxfps to maybe 275 or lower so the game NEVER hits that critical 300+ fps.

Idk man the 303 fps has been treating me well. I do avg about 26-48 ping tho. Unless my connection is Bork'd.

Update: When there are more than 5 people on the server the 303 fps goes kaput. Had to lower it to 180 to regain workability. Ah well.

Hey all, I got a report today that some of my settings caused some issues for someone. I assure you the BOB ones are nothing but good and will absolutely NOT affect video card stuff or CPU or connection, but the maxpackets and maxfps are of course going to depend on your personal setup and hardware. Maybe just note your current values just in case, and play with it a bit. Cheers.

I use a pink crosshair (circle with dot , didn't like just dot) ... the idea being that pink stands out to your eyes more against everything else on screen.
My FOV is 100.39 ... seemed to be the value people said to use for my particular resolution (1920 x 1200) ... presumably some math behind it. There is some other values for other resolutions.
Mouse sensitivity is 3 I think ... believe I have it set to what enables me to easily make a 180 degree turn (ie not dragging your mouse all the way across the mouse pad (or pizza box) in order to turn) ... probably depends on your mouse and DPI settings and stuff, could be something to play around with.
I also have these settings going on for mouse I think, I forgot what they do exactly.
seta m_pitch "0.015001" seta m_yaw "0.022" seta m_forward "0.25" seta m_side "0.25" seta m_filter "0"
I was looking at my compass settings earlier ... I thought I used to play with it zoomed out some to see more guys on the compass, but I noticed it was pretty zoomed in. So I just zoomed that out a bit, will have to play with it and see if it's beneficial or not.

Magenta tiny dot here. Ftw. I keep draw gun off more for FOV than for fps. Not a huge difference but I prefer it for some reason. Helps me focus on the heads I'm shooting. Does cause some issues when I think I have my primary weapon out and I actually have out my pliers or needle. Also: blood splatter off but blood flash on low.

Just the info I was looking for to tweak my new rig But I have a question, Pimp, I see you have 1920x1080 as a rez. How did you get ET into that rez? Is it a MOD/addon? Can you can force it with console-cmd even tho it's not listed in options? I used to always play at 800x600. As I got a faster PC over the years, I went to 1028x768. I've never been able to go to a higher rez that wouldn't either pop out of fullscreen or display 4:3/letterbox on my 45" TV/monitor. *aside: Delord once told me that he played in 800x600, that it helped. I see the logic, more pixalated players so they would kinda fill the hit-boxes more. So where on a higher rez, you may 'miss' the enemy's shoulder, where on a lower rez, there may be 'more-blocky-shoulder-to-see". Hit-box would remain the same size, you just have something with more squared-off-edges inside. And the more-blocky-target may be more noticable than a smoother-target. my 2c on that. And I've always just used a 90fps cap. I must try the 250fps thank you for tips guys ----------- New Rig: (inherited x-server from a biz that moved to cloud-based. Not much good for desktop 'in a regular person's hands', as some uncommon hardware on board. So I wouldn't call the 'desktop-OS drivers' for a server as 'stable' as what they will write for the "server-based OSs". So it was retired from biz. Rarely do servers-going-into-regular-worker's-hands not require more support. Xeon 3.6Ghz Quad core CPU 24GB DDR3 Nvidia Geforce GT710, 1GB GDDR5 (I added) (3) 120GB SSDs set up in a RAID0/striped. (fastest, full bandwidth added together from each SSD on R/W. ~1.5GB/ps R/Ws, no redundancy; backup, backup, backup..(Macrium ISO))* (1) hybrid (SSD/HDD) 1TB drive for 'thrashing' (downloads, bit-torrents) (1) 8TB USB HDD for storage Win7Pro-64bit (for the next 4 yrs at least) Used 8GB of the RAM to set up a RAMDRV. (A RAMDRV is to an SSD, what an SSD is to a HDD. I get almost 3GB/ps R/W from this drive. ET loads under a second, next map loads the same)** *((2) more SSDs will be added to RAID when I get chance/motivation to; image my drive, break RAID, add (2) more SSDs, create new RAID, restore ISO image. (fyi - create ISO's and clones with Macrium Reflect (free). Works great. I use a lot when transferring ppl from HDD to SSDs. Partition-Guru (free, portable) to shrink partitions to fit onto new smaller SSD if Windows won't shrink them small enuff for ya, if your PC has RESTORE partitions (ie. Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.)> you just need the SYSTEM and C: drive partitions and should work. Clone those (2) (do a disk cleanup first before resizing on C:. Use WinDirStat to find the largest files. Turn off hibernation and delete hibernation file (google it), resize to a smaller swapfile (if needed, you can resize larger later on new clone if need be), then run diskcleanup in Windows, be sure to delete ALL files including system files. Reboot, create clone, shut down, unplug old HDD, plug SSD with same cables. If starts and works fine. Your old HDD is now your master backup. If you want to restore system, re-clone from original or put original back in and do SYSTEM RESTORE, then create new clone) **Used ImDisk (free) to create a RAMDRV. Definitely consider making one if you have 8GB+ on your system. RAMDRVs are volatile since created from RAM. Power goes out you've lost what's on there. (I have a RAW copy in backup folder + the ISO as 'backup'). ImDisk has setting so it creates ISO of RAMDRV on shutdown, restores that ISO onto RAMDRV on start up. On that drive I have my ET and RTCW folder (yay! ), TEMP internet cache, temp folders, (IMDisk will put them there for you, all except swapfile), TEMP folders I keep clean to minimize ISO size on shut/start). If I install a game, I'll install on RAMDRV if it fits. Then when I might not play it for awhile, I'll move it to a 'holding folder' on another drive. I can copy it back later onto the RAMDRV to play. My Steam folder is on a larger drive because of space it takes. I plan on adding another 1GB RAMDRV and put Windows swapfile on it. It's a little 'tricky' to do so, why I've waited. Windows balks at directly copying/moving it's swapfile, so extra steps are needed. Once done, I'll just hide that drive so don't have to see it. The slower your PC, and/or the bigger the RAMDRV ISO, the longer the shutdown/startup is. (Adds about 8-10secs to my shut/start. But this system is extremely fast at disk R/Ws. On a regular HDD you get in the ballpark of 100MB/ps. This rig operates at 1500MB/3000MB/ps, reason for quick ISO and minimal impact on start/shut). Windows, just doesn't get it about RAM! Even in the their latest miscarriage they call Win10. The more RAM you add to system, the bigger Windows will make the swapfile. I have lots of RAM! Use it!! During PC setups, I always adjust to a static size (depends on PC role, less for gaming, 1GB or maybe 512MB or 256MB if system is stable after), more for office work, 4-8GB), preferably on 2nd HDD/SSD. Windows wanted me to have a 32GB swapfile with 24GB of RAM on board. *facepalm The more RAM, the bigger Windows makes it. I choose a freshly formatted partition, nothing on drive to get one continuous file, (fragmentation is a moot point on SSDs, but old habits die hard, hehe But definitely a step on the side of 'helps speed' when using HDD.) hmmm, maybe I've been scarce on the forums because it gives me verbal diarrhea.

(I looked for a shaking-the-finger-at icon,...)
If any of you are still running on a regular HDD, get off it!!
Here, I paid $30CAN per Kingston 120GB SSD (Newegg). I only use Intel SSDs in customer PCs. I'm willing to 'risk' a cheaper brand for myself because it was such deal at the time, I bought (5) of them. They tout 1,000,000hrs MTBF.
You will get no bigger bang for your gaming-buck than a $150CAN (5)-SSD-RAID with disk size of about 1TB. A single 1TB SSD, (that would run at 1/5th the speed of the RAID), is $220CAN.
It will double the speed of your PC. At least. (contrary to the Kingston packaging that says "10x FASTER!", hehe. *eyeroll, marketers, sheesh..) You can expect a doubling of speed of your PC hands down, you may see other increases depending on your settings. (low RAM, more swapfile-thrashing, more speed increase).
Anyone needs help in doing so just ask (Win7Pro64). It's fairly easy to do. If your comfortable/understand partitions and ISOs, easy peasy...
even if you just add the SSD as a secondary drive, (just connect it inside the PC), you can put your games on it and move the Windows swapfile and TEMP folders to it. It won't be 2x the speed, but you will see a noticable increase. easier than easy peasy, hehe

Obviously use the best numbers that are native to your monitor. 1920x1080 might not be good for your monitor dimensions. See the part of my first post regarding my TARGET SHORTCUT. It launches the game in that res. you can also just change it manually in the console. Just remember to \vid_restart after

@pimp Yep, I tried it (ET-icon command line), and it worked !! I went back and tried the same for RTCW and DOOM3. They all work in 1080P!! So now I'm a kid in a candy store, I dunno what to play! thank you muchly! One thought on somewhere it's mentioned about wall-mark lifetime. IMO, It is good to have turned on, even for the shortest interval. They are good 'info'. You may run into a spot, notice bullet marks, and take a little more caution in that area. Good for Covys, sneaking behind fights, follow the bullet marks, find and grab a dead body uni. Knowing how long the mark lasts on wall, you can judge "they came this way 5 minutes ago Kemo Sabe.." So, on for 'some info' if you pay attention to those sort of things. Info about your enemy in a war is as good as a bullet hehe
