k- here's the dilema i had 512mb of memory in this computer, but wanted more, so i went to my motherboards website and then purchased the memory they recommend (makes sense right?) i bought 2GB of Kingston ram Part No: KVR400X64C3AK2/2G My motherboard is the Abit Fatal1ty AN8 SLI with the latest BIOS version here's the compatibility page on their website www2.abit.com.tw/test_report/Fatal1ty%20AN8%20SLI/and under the "DDR400" category the first on on the list is the memory i bought also it says the DRAM timings are 3,8,3,3 which i have already tried (to the best of my knowledge) but my pc always blue screens when booting - and works fine when i put the old memory back in i think it has to be something in the memory timings but so far none of the ones i have tried have worked anywho.... any suggestions?

When does it bluescreen? Immediately after it begins to load windows? When its about to show you a login screen? Have you tried booting into safe mode? I'm assuming that the machine POSTs ok (power on self test) and detects the correct amount of memory running at the correct frequency? Also... is the computer overclocked?

it bluescreens somewhat randomly - most of the time during when windows is starting up but before the logon screen - i did get it to log in once - but it has not been able to do that since
i haven't tried safe mode - but im pretty sure it would blue screen regardless - since it is a memory timing thing..
no the computer isn't overclocked
i have a feeling im am going to end up either callling kingston or else a-bit and getting someone to tell me the correct memory timings, since none of the ones i have found have worked.
im just amazed that i bought the exact memory they recommend - and still cant get it to work - it's just plain stupid

Just an idea, back when i was building computers I always had problems with kingston ram on abit mb's. Might wanna check another brand of ram before doing anything else.

I know u said the bios was updated. If it bluescreens randomly, thats usually a settings issue, but you say you tried the recommended CAS n such. Is there an option to set the timing by SPD in your bios, and if so, have you tried that? I'm just throwin suggestions out there.

i know the problem doesnt have anything to do with windows - and im pretty sure it has to do with the timings that are set in the BIOS.
Yes, i can go into the BIOS and set each clock speed manually (SPD)- but that is what i have been doing all along and so far none of the settings i have tried actually worked...

IIRC, setting the memory by SPD should set the timings automatically.

sorry you are right - there is "auto" "manual" and "SPD"
none of which work - so i was manually picking each of the settings and so far haven't come up with a combination that works

Did you buy the RAM from a store near you or did you order it? I am telling you, that Kingston RAM doesn't like A-bit mb's or vice-versa.

First thing I'd look at is the physical configuration of the RAMs.
You say you had 512 before, are you trying to run the new 2GB alongside the old 512, or did you take the 512 out?
Have you tried running each new stick individually? running Memtest86+ on each stick individually?
ANother possibility (althogh remote) is that the 2GB put you just over the limit of your power supply. Especially on an SLI mobo, the power draw is insane. And random BSODs or crashes is a very good indicator of power problems.
What exactly is the BSOD you are getting anyway? (if it flashes by too fast, then reboots, right click My Computer-> properties-> advanced-> Startup and Recovery-> UNcheck "automatically restart"
this will make it just sit there on the BSOD, so you can copy it and tell me what exactly its saying.
also, post FULL specs from your rig:
CPU RAMs video card mobo sound enabled onboard devices (USBs, LAN, firewire, etc) Power supply: I need to know how much amperage per rail: 3.3v @ ??A 5v @ ??A 12v @ ??A -12v, -5v, and 5v standby are not terribly important.
Ahh troubleshooting, my favorite part of PC building...

So you have never had trouble with Kingston ram on an A-bit board Zohar?

nope, in fact one of my standard builds for a good while in 2k3 was the Abit NF7-S and 2*512 Kingston VR or Hyper-X.
This of course doesnt mean that there isnt a possible compatibility problem considering we are talking about A64 vs. my experience with AXP, and I have not used Kingston+Abit with A64 yet. These days I go for Corsair in the value sector and for performance RAM, I do a bit of research to see who is using what chips at the time.

sorry for taking so long to get back - ive been going back and forth with some ppl on abit's forums - and they gave me a ton of suggestions i needed to try... but of course none of them worked so now i am just going to return the memory - probably for a 15% restocking fee and probably spend more money on a different kind of RAM that *might* work

its beyond me why it is so difficult to get to work with my motherboard
i have bought kingston memory in the past and never had a problem... i dunno - bad luck this time
