Your rig probably has an AGP slot. If/when you insert an AGP card, it will disable the onboard graphics automatically, though you will want to go into the BIOS and make sure no system RAM is still being allocated to it. The ONLY way to be sure you have an AGP slot is to open the case and look at the motherboard. Here is a handy pic to help you out: And why ATI, exactly? Nvidia makes better to much better cards at any given price point these days...

the monitor I need = Dell 2405FPW And yes, the X850 is 1337, but for the same money the GF7800GT is more 1337-er... (and thats assuming the 850XT..the 850pro cant even hang.) At any price point you can think of, NV has a better card than ATI right now. That may change (it usually does) but for now NV is definitely the way to go. NTM Nvidia ALWAYS has better OpenGL cards, and our favorite game, ET happens to be OpenGL.

You should buy the Nvidia 6800 GT.
That is what I have. I think it works wonders.

the 6800GT is no longer a viable option; the GS is out now, does the same job slightly better and costs less.
According to xe.com, 150CAD is about 128USD... looks like a GF 6600 is the best for that price, but I strongly suggest you stretch out another $25 or so so you can get the 6600GT @ about 175CAD.
By comparison, ATI has the 9800Pro(3 years old card) or the X700, which is essentially a 9800 with a different name, performance wise.

my 9700 pro is starting to show its age D!ablo, not all boards disable the onboard graphics automatically upon inserting a card. You will likely need to disable it in the bios after you install the card. I've seen some systems go wacko from having 1 onboard device and 1 card at the same time (although newer boards may be 'smarter' about this).

listen to this! I have a 6600 GT (overclocked to 551/1002) -- This baby is unbeleivable. Im running ET at 1680x1050 everything set to "high quality"(custom resolution script: //FullScreen/Window toggle seta r_customwidth "1680" seta r_customheight "1050" set full0 "r_mode -1;r_fullscreen 0;set screen vstr full1;vid_restart" set full1 "r_mode 8;r_fullscreen 1;set screen vstr full0;vid_restart" Thx zoh ) and still getting 60-70 FPS! The lowest its has ever dipped is 35, and that was in the middle of flamer fire. Frigging. Wewt. (can you tell I am loving this monitor?)

you should also screw around with cg_fov. default is 90, but at 1680*1050, you should probably run at 100 or 110, thus getting rid of the stretching effect of widescreen, and with the added bonus of increasing your "peripheral" field of view by a nice bit. Dont go over 120 or PB will kick ya! *turns more green* but would this affect et? or the diffenrence is not noticable Not really.

With a 6600 GT Overclocked you only get 60-70 FPS?
I don't know if this is just me being stupid but,
a good card like that overclocked should get you more around better FPS?
I have a 6800 GT, I could use highest settings and still cap at 250 FPS.
I think this is just me, but should you get more?
Oh and I also used r_mode 8 as well.

Run it with high settings at 1680*1050 res and see what your FPS caps at... Youll be lucky to pull off 85, and that is by virtue of the 6800GTs 16 pipes and 256bit memory interface.
Jiminy's card has 8 pipes, and a 128bit memory interface. 60-70 at that res is frikkin amazing, really. Without the OC, he'd be pulling low 50s.

Oh ok,
Quick Question Zohar,
Should I wait like 3 months and buy the new AMD Anthlong 939, coming from a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz?

If you wait till say feb-march, you should be able to find some very good deals on 939 bundles...
I would strongly reccomend the Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard, and the fastest A64 you can comfortably afford.
The nice thing about the 939Dual-SATA2 is that it has both AGP and PCI-Ex16 slots, making future video card upgrades easy, while still letting you use your 6800GT for awhle.
The ULi 1695 chipset has proven to be one hell of a performer too.

The Most i will probably spend is about 800, would that be enough without going over budget? I would liek to keep my GT for the rest of the year unless it takes a poop on me. I'll take your advice though

with what you already have, $800 could get you a VERY nice rig...
Depends on whether you want to re-use your RAM, monitor, K&M, etc.
