Meehh, im getting to the point where im not going upgrade, and im getting a new computer in a year or so.
Reasons:
got the early amd 64 (3200+ with 700some pins instead of 900some pins) motherboard doesnt have pci-e PSU is a bit lacking
Id wait around until you can ditch agp and go with a pci-e card
Some of the motherboard/cpu combos on pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com/) look mighty juicy, but i dont know the ins and outs of using a new motherboard and cpu with my existing hardware. Do I need to refromat my HD, or can I plug it all in and it will magically work (i suspect this is not the case)
Zooooh?

AGP is still a good performer. Most people dont realize that before even 8x AGP came out, there was already talk of how the most frequent upgrade to video cards was never the bottleneck (ie: from agp 1x to 2x to 4x to 8x). Granted the upgrade was necessary from PCI, but PCI-e has tons of bandwidth that typically isn't even being used in the first place. Nvidia released the 7800 series in AGP and it is a great performer. You can check out the benchmarks for it on tomshardware.com.
P.S. Invest in as much system RAM as you can!

Yes, yes its a good performer NOW, but I wouldnt go buying a NEW AGP card, especially if its feasible and timely to upgrade your whole system in a year or so.
PCI-e is the future, is all im getting at.

I agree JiMinY. But there are still progressive ways of upgrading (ie: he could buy a board with both AGP and PCI-e later (AGP will still be supported for a year or two).
I myself just bought a new system, and will be leaving AGP behind as well. Can't wait to put her together.

there is in fact ONE board with both, and only one. THe Asrock 939Dual-SATA2, which is a great board.
There are others that have "AGP-E" or "XGP" slots, which are AGP interfaces bridged onto the PCI-E bus, and they are all very bad.

Two great sites that I frequent are:
1. For information - tomshardware.com They have some great comparison charts, AGP vs. PCI and have reviewed 90% of the new cards out there, even the 1800 and such......
2. To purchase - newegg.com They seem to always be one of the lowest priced and the feedback they receive is phenominal....
Just my two cents.
