Just got FF12 for my b-day, and OMGWTF @ the battle system... Its like a MMORPG system with real-time fights, charge times for different actions, and a system for building your allies AI that is absolutely unreal in its scope and breadth. (you get 3 party members, but you control only one. the others act based on the way you set up thier AI, or "gambit" as the game calls it)
Ill be playing this thing for the next 8 months or so, trying to get the best out of my AI. And my Japanese is about to improve alot again lol..

If there are some Final FAntasy games you wanna start with, Final Fantasy I is NOT one of them.
Even if it is on the GBA (Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls). Try starting with one of the later ones (I highly recommend Final Fantasy VI. If you're going to look for that one it'll be called Final Fantasy III in America, but in Japan it's really Final Fantasy VI.) Keep in mind that FFVI is for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) and therefore you will need one to play it.

well the main character does look like a bit of a girl, but the rest arent so bad... Basch looks just liek James Hetfield.
And FFVI is a good one to start with, I agree. You can get it on the playstation or the SNES. SNES version = FFIII in US, the playstation version = FFVI, which is part of FF Anthology (includes V and VI, incedentally the only US release of FFV ever.)

Im about 30 hours in now, and have come to grips with the battle/upgrade system fairly well, and its both like and completely not like KH, or any other FF ever. TBH, its alot more like Diablo2 or Dungeon Siege. In fact my new name for this game is World of Final Diablo Dungeon Fantasy Siegecraft XII.
Its like the basic KH movement system, running around in real time with the enemy, but all actions are still charge/time based, kinda like WoW actually. where KH is straight action - push the button and Sora swings the keyblade - FF12 is like -> hit the button-> menu pops up-> select attack-> charge bar fills-> charactaer attacks-> character starts charging attack again until you press the button to tell him different. The menu works for all characters in battle, but non-controlled characters act based on AI scripts that the player writes using the Gambit system. Right now, my characters have 15 triggers and about 200 actions that can be taken based on a given trigger. For anyone whos played FFs before, this game actually makes spells like Dispell or Protect/Shell useful, since you dont have to mess with casting them constantly; just make one of your party members constantly check to see if anyone needs the buff, and if they do, cast it. IF everyone has it, they move onto the next line of the gambit which says 'attack the leaders target" and thus they help you kill the enemy cause no one needs the buff. Put 15 of those in a row, in the right order, and you can make your guys dispell buffed enemies, buff your party, heal HP damage, attack specific enemy types using that types weakness, protect weaker characters, and use all manner of special abilities, all based on how you build it. It f*cking rawks. This aspect is verly much like Dungeon Siege, where you build your main guy and get party members who act based on AI, only without the extremely granuar level of AI control.
Progressing in the world and in the game are very non-linear, so much so that I think its going to be a shock for many NA FF players, who are used to the FFVII forward style of linearity so aptly demonstrated by KH2.The world is also HUGE, easily 10 times as big as FFXs world in total, with 3 or 4 times the number of actual zones. At any point in the story, you can freely travel back and forth between zones youve already visited, and often find new dungeons that are optional (or maybe part of the story later, or part of the Mub Hunt). Towns are fairly big, but major cities are fracking huge, and the dungeons are pretty frackin huge too. So far there have been no less than 3 ways through any given dungeon, and I expect that will only increase as the game goes on. At each step of the story, you can either push forward quickly, or take the time to do some side stuff, get better items/weapons/etc, and at the same time get many other aspects of the story going on around you. During these times, the Diablo2 comparison is evident, you are going around town talking to people for possible quests, buying and selling items, weapons, treasure, etc, then you go into the field, fight some guys, find a dungeon, fight some tougher guys while clearing the dungeon, get a buncha drops, pop a Town Portal, er, I mean use the Warp Crystal and rinse/repeat.
The main "side quest" which is practically another game in itself is the Mob Hunt quest, wherein you take assignments from clients and your clan leader to go fight particularly nasty mobs. This whole aspect of the game screams WoW at me honestly. Get a hunt request-> go kill the mob-> report back and get the goodies-> get next hunt. You get some very good drops/rewards for this, and it makes a nice reason to trek all the way to the end of some optional dungeons to find the mob, while grinding levels on weaker mobs.
Character advancement is based on experience levels, and the License Board. The board is layed out as a grid, with each square being either a stat increase, an equipment license, an ability license, a passive skill license or a special square. You buy licenses with License Points earned in battle, and in general you need the license board to do anything useful. Say you got a nice sword to drop from a mob, you cant actually equip and use that sword until youve bought the license to do so. Same thing for abilities like magic and class-specific skills like steal. You must buy the scroll to teach the ability, and then buy the license to use it. The exception is stat increase and passive skills which are applied as soon as you buy the license. These are things like HP increases, attack power increases, or passive buffs like Potion Knowledge which makes basic potions heal more HP. Special squares hold Summon spells (called Espers) and Limit Breaks. Both are massively powerful skills, but cost a ton of LP and in the case of summons, you must first find and defeat the Esper to add it to the board, then buy the license. The board starts out blank, and licenses are revealed only when you buy a bordering license.
Finally, the story itself. It is also like Diablo2 or Dungeon Siege in that it is mostly there to serve as a reason you are travelling the world killing mobs. This is VERY unlike Final Fantasy, and this I feel is going to be a REALLY big shock to NA gamers. Completely UNlike FF, this is a political story, not the usual "some very powerful evil guy is going to destory/enslave the world" schtick. It IS unfortunately the usual "small country is invaded by the evil empire and has to fight to regain freedom" schtick. One thing about it that is very striking is that the "main" character, Vaan, is not the hero of the story. This isnt really a spoiler here, since the game makes it pretty clear from the beggining that he is just sort of swept up in events due to proximity, and has nothing to really do with the parties decisions and actions. He just swings the sword so to speak. (though Ashe, the dethroned queen herself, is actually the best tank in the game lol). He has the whole "I am a citizen of Dalmaska and thus I must fight for its freedom" thing going, but he doesnt rise above the level of a trusted General in the ranks of the Liberation Army.
So there you go; way more info than anyone wanted about FFXII.
