This post is mainly aimed at Aelfwen, whom i know is neck deep in the game by now im sure.
But is anyone else playing FFXII? Im on play hour 12 and have found my first real good opportunity to do some gold earning and level whoring. Really enjoying the game and the story so far, the new battle system is way better then i expected.
Protip: Gambit someone with Foe HP >= 70% --> Steal
You will rack up mad lootz without having to issue the command manually everytime... the "dedicated thief" as we'll call him will just wander around to all enemies that have currently engage the party and steal from them, after doing so, he will commence attacking once they are below 70% health.

i stopped playing final fantasys after 9, (mainly cuz i dont have a ps2)... i tried to play some of the new ones, but the new way you fought was just too silly.

Aelf isnt playing it... probably wont for awhile. I, OTOH have finished it twice. I like this steal gambit better: Leader-> enemy HP 100% = steal THEN most recent target = attack 2nd = Target leaders enemy-> slow (stop. dontmove/act. whatever) THEN target leaders enemy-> attack 3rd = target enemy with <100%hp-> attack Using this, your leader will steal from every new enemy that shows up, while the second guy does status things to them to help out. The third guy does nothing, so hes ready for emergencies. Soon as you steal, manually make the leader smack the enemy once. Now that they have < 100% hp, the other guys finish him off. The leader gets in on that too, since the enemy no longer has 100% hp. THis does NOT work well if you get mobbed by more than 4-5 enemies at once - the leader keeps trying to steal from everyone, which throws off the targetting of the others. But its great for single encounters or more manageable groups. PROTIP from the Z-Hizzle!! As soon as you can get to Lhusu mines, go in there and start chaining skeletons. It will take a few at first, but once you lvl up to around 15 it becomes easy. NOW, keep running back and fourth bewteen the areas where skels spawn, but NO OTHER ENEMIES DO! (should be the first and second bridge areas) Use R2 to escape from any encounters other than skels. Hit up a 999 chain. THis will be boring, but will net you almost 2000LP. Buy all the stat boost licenses first!! No point in wasting LP on spells and equips that you wont get for another 30 hours! OK, so as soon as you can get to the shop outside Mosphoran Highwaste, buy Gold Amulets for all your active guys. Now go back to Lhusu and 999 chain skels again, with the gold amulets thats roughly 6000 LP for each active members, and 4000 for non-actives. Have all your licenses bought by the time the first 1/4 of the game is done... I personally had them all bought at Raithwall the first time, not till the Bahamut the second. ANyway, Ive played the game to death and back, and Id like to note that I did it on the Japanese version, several months ago (for all you guys who waited patiently for the NA release)

heh Zoh its amazing you'd mention the Lhusu mines cause THATS EXACTLY where im grinding right now.
So awesome.
On the exact same skellies you are talkin about... the ones that pop outta the floor on the bridges.
yeah, thats a very good gambit... the only reason i dont have it setup similar is because right now i am not able to buy those gambit that you have listed. the best i can do is the HP >= 70%
I do have the HP = 100% one... but since im a cheap bastard, just in case i dont get it on the first try i want that character to try it again.
What do you reccomend for party weapons/armor?
I've got a tank in heavy armor and 1h sword right now, a thief type in light armor and daggers (will be switching to katanas when available) and a ranger (caster/support) with a gun or bow depending on the character choice. would i be better off making one of them a mage type and using a staff?
Post your thoughts o wise one.

I went with 2 sword tanks - Ashe and Vaan lol, then had Fran with a bow. White magic all around. For some bosses I went with a gun on Fran, which can do good damage since guns ignore defense, but they get obsolete fast and you get relatively few upgrades. TBH I didnt get into alot of experimenting with different weapon types, cause in Japanese its kind of confusing to begin with. Once we get a copy or two of the NA version I will mess around with it more.
THe good accesories are Gold AMulet - doubles gained LP, Bubble Chain - doubles max HP, Libra Bangle - constant Libra effect, Chick Tibet - doubles ganied XP
It occurs to me that those are all probably callled something differnt in the NA version as well.

Game was fun for a bit, mainly because I was lvl 40 or so before I left the starting city (Rabanaster?). The battle system is far too reminiscent of FFXI for those that have played it though..

i havent played XI so XII was new to me, but after i got used to it the battle was pretty cool, i think i still like the turn-based better, if only because nothing can ever compare to VII which had a turn base (and every other cool thing)....but the way t he world makes it easy to level up, i intentionally get myself lost so by the time i find my way home im a lot higher of a level than i should be. the only problem i see with this game is that the mists made a lot of the bosses pretty easy, i almost killed two of them with one try because i linked 3 or 4 of them together, which makes it so another attack comes, making it impossibly easy to finish him/her/it off

The battle system reminds me of the battle system from Vagrant Story, though I like this system better.

Now, about the battle system. It is an ANIMATION upgrade only! Seriously, the basic flow of battle is still as much "turn based" as the ATB battles from FF 6-9, just with MUCH better animation. Lets compare the salient points: 1. Charge time. In 6-9, you charge an "action bar", once its full, you select a command which then happens as soon as it can. In XII, you select an action, then it charges, and then happens as soon as it can. Both systems require charging the action, and both require that a previous action (from an ally or enemy) resolve before the selected action takes place. 2. Turn sequence. In 6-9, the battles are in "active time". THis means that the Speed stat defines when an action takes place in relation to other actions. Lets say I have 16 speed, and the enemy has 17. We both choose attack at the same time - the enemy will hit me first because he has higher speed. This is EXACTLY the same in XII! ALthough it seems like "real time" because of the animation, it is still being ordered by the speed stat, and only one action can happen at once. 3. When can you give orders? In 6-9, once the characters charge bar is full, it becomes their "turn", which simply means they are selected and want you to tell them to do something. You can always skip them of course, but most players never do, and so they get the idea that the character HAS TO do something when their "turn" comes up. FFXII again, is exactly the same, only now, the game never forces you to give any orders. You can choose to give orders at any time, but you dont have to. This very slight difference in implementation is one of the primary factors that makes pepple think this battle system is so different, when it is just not. Now lets look at Gambits. Many people say "OMG gambits are so revolutionary!!" but again, they arent. I have been playing RPGs for many years, and at least half of them tried to implement some kind of "auto-battle" AI for your party members. The first one was either Tales of Phantasia on the SNES, or Phantasy Star 4 on the Genesis (not sure on the time frames there) Either way, that was in the early 90s!! Gambits are just a really well done auto-battle system. Again, the same idea thats been going around for years, implemented slightly differently. And finally, the animation itself. What we see in FFXII is the natural evolution of the series. In the first FF, your attack animation was that your little dude moved to the left 4 pixels, and the enemy took damage. In FF4, this was upgraded to include the swinging of little sprite arms holding weapons. In FF7, it was again upgraded to include the character actually running over to the enemy, hitting them with the weapon, and then running back into formation. FFXII takes that to the next level: you now have real time control of all animations yourself. The real-time nature of the animation DOES NOT change the basic flow of battle! and that is the essential point that most people miss. The animation and relatively high speed of combat trick them into thinking its a real time battle system. Lastly, a point about random battles. Many people say FFXII has none. Of course, it does, but there are no screen breaks now, battles all happen on the same screen you see when running around. That does not change the fact that you will have to fight pissant enemies while exploring, it just means that you can see them beforehand. To be fair, they are always in roughly the same places within a zone, so they arent really "random" I guess, but the priciple of fighting a bunch of lower-powered general issue monsters before you get to the boss has not changed.

The reason I disliked the gambit system is that all gambits were not made readily available from the start, so in that context FFXI's system has it beat. The game is fine, but after getting lvl 60 or so & my zodiac spear...there wasn't really much incentive to play for me. I stopped playing @ the entrance to Draklor labs, & unless the story gets a lot more interesting I can't see myself playing it for some time.

Dude, you stopped right when it gets good.
Not the story, that never gets good, but after Draklor, the real Mark Hunts start showing up, and you can start going after the optional bosses and side quests, which is where FFXII really shines. Some of the optional bosses are just insane. Yiazmat has 50 million HP. Yes, fifty million. It takes most people several HOURS to beat him. And its not just set your gambits and walk away for 3 hours, that fight will require the full use of the battle system functions at your disposal.
