I'm making the move to HD in the next couple days. I was wondering what should be my first Blu-Ray and HD DVD purchase. I'm picking up 2 movies for each format.

You are going to buy BOTH HD DVD and Blue Ray? That is pointless and you would be a fool to do it. Frankly the picture quality is not all that better than a normal DVD on a good TV. Invest in a TV and wait to get either Blue Ray or HD DVD when we know which format is going to be around in 5 years and when the prices come down. The last thing you want is to end up having spent a ton of money on something that will be as useful as a Betamax.

I'm buying a internal LG Blu-Ray HD DVD drive for my PC. Since it can read both formats, I figured I would purchase two awesome exclusives from both catagories.

seems like i heard, just in the last couple weeks, that one of the big players that supported HD jumped ship and went over to the blu ray side

Based on my research I tend to favor Blu-ray. Of course, keep in mind that to take full advantage of either format, you need the proper gear. Don't expect superb high definition on a shitbox TV. However, at this point I will not commit to either. EDIT: lol well I see noone actually suggested purchases. For Blu-ray I would probably purchase The Fifth Element and Pan's Labyrinth first. The latter is supposed to be breathtaking on Blu-ray (and it's a kickass movie), while ...Element (also kickass) was a standard demo DVD back in the day and the Blu-ray is supposed to be very nice as well.* * make sure you purchase the remastered version of The Fifth Element. The initial 2006 release suffered from a poor transfer. The easiest way to spot the remastered version is to look for the inclusion of a "Dolby TrueHD 5.1" audio listing on the back. The last thing you want is to end up having spent a ton of money on something that will be as useful as a Betamax. As an aside, if the world wasn't so collectively stupid, Betamax would have won the format war. Marketing over technology. Yay. Higher-end Beta units (Sony's SL-HF1000 for example) can still command $500-1000 on eBay.

hope i'm not to late... warner bros is now only doing blueray and with the way the contracts were written with other companies that had a hand in hd-dvd now they don't have to stay. So by the end of 2008 hd-dvd will be dead.

Good luck finding things to play on it. It's strictly for collector's and hobbyists now true, but that doesn't mean the technology wasn't superior.

Well, I broke down and bought a PS3. They jacked the price up on the internal hd drive I was going to buy. So instead, I decided to purchase the PS3. I didn't get any games yet, just a couple of movies. It's pretty nifty.
