I'd have to say The Hitchhikers Guide books take that prize but there are others right up there with it:
Any book written by Dave Barry Good Omens

Since it's probably the only comedy book I've read, and it IS a good one, The Hitchhikers Guide books take the prize IMO.
Sci-fi/comedy book, that is.

Its a series of books that were made into a TV series in the UK called Porridge, with Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale (Kates Dad). The series is about 20 years old and i've only seen a few episodes but the books are brilliant. Its about a guy in prison and how he cons everybody around him.
