(excuse my lousy english) as an agnostic and with all do respect, i think of the bible as the reunion of all the literature genders that exist...magic realism("Apocalypse"); romantic poetry(sorry but, as a spanish speaking ppl, dunno whats the exactly name of it, but literaly: "Chant of Chants" :S); etc...and even all fation kind of cientific research: Cosmology("Genesis")...this is why i agree with the "best book ever"...but as far as nobody knows me in here...who cares!!...lol...

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn!

the best book ever has to be fight club (chuck palahnuik, what a surname!). it really (nearly) changed my life, in terms of the way i look at things.
if you have read/are about to read/are reading the book, if you understand the last chapter i will personally organise for you to have some sort of incident with your jewellery...
(why did i say that? this is a true fact...
"In the next seven days, 800 Americans will be injured by their jewelry."
freaky, heh?)

very good observation Zoh. never thought about that. some socialogy major you turned out to be... i'm not catholic but it was requirred that we read and study the bilbe during the classes. i found it remarkably interesting how "god" referred to slaves, all the disciples had different stories and the old testament was hella funny, like one guy have a bajillion kids with a bajillion women, but its not even in the top 50 books in my opinion...best selling yes, good message, yes but there are plenty of other religions that say the same thing in a more, dignified (right word?), manner. personally i like the Guru Granth Sahib (sikh religion) and the thought of Reincarnation and Karma. my FAVORTIE part of the bible is when the guys boning the one woman and he doesnt wanna get her pregnant so he takes his penis out and puts his seed (semen) on the floor (the only reference to masturbating in the bible). And then god f*cking smites him haha

The Bible has sold 6.7 billion copies and the next closest book has sold 900 million. Based on that fact alone and not even whether you believe in the Bible's accuracy (which I do), I think it can be argued that the Bible is the best book ever. no way. christianity is the wolds biggest religion, and you must have a book to join the club. haha probably not but most catholics own one anyways... and you may argue that its the world biggest religion, but my counter would be, most of the world is NOT catholic.

i think science and the bible could be used together, it says God made the world in 7 days, but scientest say that doesnt leave room for anything. well the standard 24 hour day wasnt made back then, maybe the biblical day was over thousands of years. lol. its a metaphor ( correct one at that) of how long the it took the world to be made. it is completely untrue (the 7 days) but the steps to making it are true (what happened in each day)...these days took some million of yrs + to occur but...yeah

wow...what a nice topic. considering the Bible being the best book ever. Best is really a subjective term, which leaves it to everybody's opinion whether it is the best book or not. hmm considering Catholicism, although centered around the bible i believe it not to be the way to go, seeing how "they" like to pick and choose what to abide by, also considering how they like to add their own manuals and take the word of the pope as divine shocks me, it shouts religion to me. no wonder some of the strongest atheists come from a very religious background. As religion became a political tool used by the government to swade people, where promises were made in God's name, of which weren't fulfilled, I now see why people have a strong refusal to hear anything about Christianity on a whole. I see religion as mans' attempt to reach God, stripping away ones freedom to think logically and freely; deploying terms such as "don't ask why, just do it" and "that's what it says, don't question it", is God so one-sided that we arn't allowed to ask him for answers? I for one don't believe that. I personally believe that Jesus came about not to bring religion, but relationship...but thats another topic for another day. sorry couldn't help but digress from the main topic.

I am agnostic and was brought up in a pretty strict religious household (my dad is a retired pastor), I know a good amount of scripture, which I believe everyone should. If you don't read the Bible for its religious qualities, I think you should read it just like any other piece of literature, because it has good values and virtues in it that apply to modern day life, as well being one of the greatest literary achievments of all time. They don't call it the Good Book for nothing.

Lolz Corymbe, thats why you arent online this week, shame on you.
Besides the impact of it and the great movies related or based on it, the bible doesnt thrill me as 'The Dialoques from Plato' (427-347 bC) ->Symposium.

As a Catholic, I have read the Bible and it does a lot of violent things. Don't believe me? Look at this: www.cracked.com/article_15699_9-most-badass-bible-verses.html However, one shouldn't take it so serious now days a lot of it is irrelevant and some is still adaptable, but its an ANCIENT book. Yes, I believe God exists, but you can't live your life in fear of whether you're going to hell and etc. Don't even get me started on the extreme Christian groups, they have NO clue what they are talking about. Since I am in a Catholic university, we have to take a religion course, and we were taught a lot of things about the Christian faith. So I know what I am talking about. Technically, forcing your own religious beliefs on another person is a sin. This can be applied to all religions, not JUST Christianity. I'll stop before I go on a huge rant about this. Anyway, I am reading Jenna Jameson's autobigraphy, "How to Make Love Like a Pornstar: A Cautionary Tale." It is well written, and let's say she is really messed up in her personal history. -EdeX

On the Bible subject, I believe there are important stories and history in it, and mythology in them. >< not word for word truth though, in the regular scientific meaning of "truth".. On an interesting side-note, there can be a strong argument that the old testament would be better placed AFTER the new testament, seeing that the new covenant in Jesus in effect does away with the 'covenant' given to Moses on mount Sinai (not to mention all the laws in Leviticus, as mentioned above, with the stoning, and slaves and what-not) To wrap this all up, Jesus probably doesn't do very well in ET, "turning the other cheek" when he gets shot, giving med packs to EVERYONE on both sides.. He'll be good at rezing though! hehehe EDIT:: Above, the new testament was very much influenced by the old, obviously. The point I'm trying to make is it would be a better appendix for the NEW.
