I'd describe the Bible as the original fiction book. Paved the way and all that. No offense to anyone.

Even if it wasnt to begin with, its been translated, re-written, and "interpreted" so many times now that it is indeed fiction.

Its a nice story so long as you don't take it at its every word. There's a whole lot of good in the Good Book but there's a whole lot of bad too.

going off of zohar i agree that it has been rewritten and such but i also believe the underlying message that is being conveyed is still there. As to what J wrote i dont take it word for word i take the message in it as a main component of my religion. but i don't think there is a whole lot of bad in the Bible!

I don't really have any beef with the New Testament. Old Testament on the other hand is f'd up in many a place. No likey the angry God thing.
Or the having slaves is ok thing. Or the selling your daughter is ok thing. Or the stoning people to death who wear clothes of two different threads thing (wtf does that even mean?) Or the death to nonbelievers thing Or the women are subordinate to men thing. (I think we all know its the other way around)
yeah, that half of the book is teh sux.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, the overall message I totally agree with, I am Catholic after all. Its just I would personally not call it the best book ever.
I save that distinction for "Oh, the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss.

The best book ever is for sure the Lonely Planet. I tried to travel with the bible but everywhere I get lost.

The Bible has sold 6.7 billion copies and the next closest book has sold 900 million. Based on that fact alone and not even whether you believe in the Bible's accuracy (which I do), I think it can be argued that the Bible is the best book ever.

I disagree.....from your info, my conclusion is that the Bible is the most popular book ever and not the 'best'. Saying anything, book related or otherwise, is the 'best' is a subjective opinion. *edit* for 6 billion propaganda pamphlets. GJ

I wasn't saying it was the best based upon that, but I actually said it can be "argued" because of that fact.
And I agree, it is a subjective opinion.

Yeah... considering the second best selling book of all time is The Little Red Book... Best selling definitely doesn't equate to best read.

mm i respect your opinion too but dont agree the bible is just words if you really believe you should have it in your mind nobody cares if you believe so bible is materialization of something purely spiritual and doent mean you cant see the reality bible is a valuable book for its history

"Best" is a term that should be used in the loosest of ways since it is purely based upon personall opinion. Now i belive in god and have read the bible(mostly the first five books/Written Torah since im jewish) and i never get bored reading it but it still can't be considered the "best" book.

two points brought out - the sheer number of copies sold over the years (not counting all those laboriously copied by scribes and monks before modern day accountants got into the picture) and the influence it has had over history so it wins on both of those counts, which can lead one to state: "best book ever written" however - accuracy, relevance to modern life, etc is subjective, because, after all, it is a question of faith - do you believe it is or isn't the word of god? the believers will hardly ever convince the non-believers, and vice-versa btw - chimera - where the heck have u been? aint seen u on the server for ages oh, and FTW ftw!!!!

I think the Bible is kind of a work of fiction and fact. Some of the stories might have happened but the way they were told was fiction. I think they were purposely told this way to give meaning for the reader. For example, the one about the guy who shared one piece of bread and everybody in the city got a piece. Probably didn't happen but the idea that one person sharing causes others to also share. Thats how the bread spread.

i think science and the bible could be used together, it says God made the world in 7 days, but scientest say that doesnt leave room for anything. well the standard 24 hour day wasnt made back then, maybe the biblical day was over thousands of years.
