those of you browsing this section, assumedly, like to read, so here you go:
have you read these? if not, i recommend them
coldfire trilogy, by CS Friedman this is great if you love fantasy - a priest who uses a sword and some magic, fights creatures of the night that are spawned from people's nightmares - he has 'faith issues' which adds a great dimension in character developement the author has a great imagination, and i highly recommend these books
chronicles of thomas covenant, the unbeliever, by Stephen R Donaldson great fantasy, fairly unique world - not the usual orcs and elves etc he starts in our world, but mysteriously finds himself in another world where he is prophecied to be the savior, however he thinks its all a dream and doesn't want to save anyone. BTW, he's a leper... great anti-hero, if you like those
also by Donaldson, Mordant's Need - 2 books, GREAT cliffhanger at the end of book one girl from our time falls through a mirror into a fantasy land, and of course, she has a unique power there. i really like the author's style here
most of michael moorcock's stuff: especially with Elric of Melnibone - he is a very sickly warrior/sorcerer who's sword "stormbringer' saps the life/drinks the souls of everyone it slices. another classic fantasy anti-hero
Melanie Rawn has a great series - Dragon Prince, with large emphasis on the political struggles, as well as magic, dragons and swordsfighting/epic battles, of course
if you like epic fantasy, you can't do a whole lot better than The Wheel of Time (not counting LOTR, of course) It starts with 'the eye of the world', and in typical fantasy fashion, the hero is unknowing, reluctant, but has the power to save the world yadda yadda yadda it was great until about the 5th & 6th books, where there were too many threads in the story - too much going on still worth reading tho - the first 5 books alone will keep you busy for a good while
Raymond E. Feist - great stuff - great imagination, wonderful worlds and characters Look for 'Magician:Apprentice' - again, a young kid has abilities he never dreamed of, and he is drawn into a fantastic struggle etc highly recommended if you like fuedal japan, try Feist & Janny Wurts 'Daughter of Empire' (book one of 3) a young girl of a powerful feudal family finds out that her father and older brother were betrayed and killed, and now she must salvage her house/clan against powerful adversaries. she comes up with some great schemes and innovations, that leads her to eventually rule the entire empire not so much in the way of magic and monsters, but the courtly shenanigans, deals, betrayals, and machinations of the clans is great reading. good action too
btw - dragonlance stuff is good too, just a little simple for my tastes OH, and old Conan the barbarian, by sprague de camp or robert e howard - must read if you are into this genre
in case you're curious, yes, i was once an English major...

You have some nice books on that list Dire. I have to add the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy by Tad Williams to your epic fantasy though. Dragonbone Chair, Stone of Farewell, and Green Angel Tower are awesome books.
Also, though maybe a little simplistic, what about some of Weiss and Hickman's other stuff like Rose of the Prophet trilogy or Death's Gate?
<3 Rose of the Prophet

tried deathgate and didn't like it - but i should give rose a try
tad williams is great - i read the first two his sci fi "Otherworld" always catches my eye when I'm in the bookstore
aelf - definitely pick up Melanie Rawn's books - dragon prince etc dont know much about 'exiles' but i'm sure its good cuz she's great

Haven't really read much SciFi, but over the past few weeks I have been doing a lot of reading while away from home and I was in a wee second-hand bookshop in Edinburgh last week and found a book called "Starship Troopers" by a guy called R Heinlein and obviously thought of the movie, which of course was based on the book. The book was excellent. Found another one by the same dude called The Day After Tomorrow, one of my favourite films, but it had nothing to do with the film.
I have a set of my Dads books, by a guy called Doc Smith, called the Lensman Series and they are actually quite good, the heroes a bit too goody-goody, but worth a read.
and thats my SciFi book knowledge.

Well, I don't really read all that much, and I have made a topic about this series called Cirque du Freak. If you find them at a local library, check one out. Heck, check the 1st and 2nd ones out. They are SciFi, and the only books I have ever paid for to read...

Just thought i'd share this: check out www.readsf.com/selling all kinds of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc merchandise they have a great search service, which i've used - ask them for a title, and they'll do theri best to find it for u, used, new, whatever they used to have a storefront in the san fernando valley, ventura blvd (los angeles), called Dangerous Visions, but they closed it cost too much to run (specialty store in a hi-rent area) they moved exclusively to the web

Thomas Covenant: Loved that series! Hated it when Foamfollower died... Deathgate series: One of THE best ever. Also loved: Shannara series, all of them, and there were many. And any other Terry Brooks series! (Did you know he wrote Star Wars Episode I? Also a great book!) Any Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman series: books.google.com/books?as_auth=Margaret+Weis&ots=ceyPRseYI1&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=author-navigationalLoved old Conan books too and I have a ton of them (since I'm old). Also even some good ol star trek novels. Also loved the Blue Adept series, just can't remember the author. And the Dennis McKiernan (sp) books as well. Feist too, great author. If you want to get away a little from dragons and wizards, I'd recommend the Incarnations series by Piers Anthony. This series was a riot! First book is "On a Pale Horse" and it's about Death, as in Death, the being who comes at your death and weighs your soul. It's all about this guy who takes over Death's job by accidently killing them. The other books are about War, Nature, Time, Fate....they're awesome. And they all focus on thwarting Satan. Death and Satan had an encounter with Satan, and Death reached out and grasped Satan's soul.....it was not a pleasant experience to say the least. LOL!

By Terry,Brooks was a good read, and R.A. salvatore for those who like the forgotten realms. Being a multiple Baldur's Gate II player, I really enjoyed the familiar world. Best Sci-Fi I've ever read would be Dune Ender's Game War of the Worlds Stranger in a Strange Land The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy The Thrawn trilogy (Star Wars books by Timothy Zahn) "Heir to the Empire" "Dark Force Rising" "The Last Command" You got it right with Ender's Game. I have read it as well as Speaker For The Dead, and a handful of others by Orson Scott Card. This guy has won the Nebula and Hugo awards which is Science Fiction's highest awards. Also I would reccomend to anyone out there The Watchmen. It's coming out in movie form shortly but the main reason im promoting that novel is due to the fact I am studying it in English(Yes studying a graphic novel in university LOL). I would love to discuss it with someone.

I have read Speaker for the Dead since making my list and I'd like to add it. You simply can't read Ender's Game and then not read Speaker for the Dead. You only really get half the story from EG. In fact, you don't even get the original story. Ender's Game was written so that there would be a back story for Speaker, which is the novel Card had planed out and mostly written before he wrote a single word of Game.
Funny you should mention Watchmen, I am reading it right now. Not for school though. Rather, not for a class. I am totally reading it because I need something fun to read along with my casebooks. I really dig it. It is a great example of how any medium can be used to tell a compelling, thought provoking, and moving story (what the snobs out there refer to as "literature" (the most pointless section in any bookstore. Just stick it in fiction and be done with it!)).

I plan to read them all. The one I really am interested in right now is his new one. It takes place between Game and Speaker.

Lol sorry for digging up this old thread but I was just so glad when I saw people talking about the Wheel of Time... ;D It's just the best series I've ever read too, and I think it's gonna keep that first place for long And you've maybe read about that already Ivan, but the book will be published ; actually RJ had written or recorded the greatest part of it, and his wife has chosen some guy to make the final version. For the moment it's supposed to be on sale in november of this year

I've got to agree with invisible, the shannara series was really good, as with another Terry Brooks series, the knight of the word.
I've also enjoyed everything i've read by Simon Green. He's a a bit darker, and a lot more sarcastic, but the books are amazing.

Oh my gosh! Out of all these I can't believe none of you included the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Great fantasy series with lots of action and it really makes you think sometimes(about life wise). Although I've only read up to Wizard and Glass, I plan on reading them all.
P.S. Also, I have to admit I've read none of these mentioned. I should check them out sometime.

update:
for those that read and liked Donaldson's Covenent trilogies (ie Lord Foul's Bane, etc) He has been writing the LAST CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT - the first two have been published and the 3rd is to be released soon. Thomas is not in it but his son and Linden Avery are some of the main characters
for those who don't know what i'm talking about: pick up Lord Foul's Bane, give it a try (fantasy, unique world, a classic in most people's opinion, and if you like anti-heroes, this one is a DOOOOOZY)
cs friedman (author of The Coldfire Trilogy) also started a new series, which i will get into soon. Magic is based on a pulling living being's essence from them, don't know much more than that
