This is a documentary about a battle between the two greatest Donkey Kong players of all time to set the high score in, you guessed it, Donkey Kong. You know, that old school arcade game from back in the day before many of you, and myself, were even born.
It sounds stupid, trivial, and booring. It also sounds like a joke, the first time a saw a trailer for it I was convinced it was a new Christopher Guest movie. But its real.
And its incredible. No joke, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. In some insane and mystical alignment of the planets, a shit ton of critics agree: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/king_of_kong/
That makes it the highest rated movie on rottentomatoes to be released in the past year. (for those of you that don't know, rottentomatoes.com is like a meta critic site that gathers and combines the reviews of real film critics)
I was astounded when I watched it for the first time, and I've continued to be astounded after having watched it another 5 or 6 times. Even though it is about something as insignificant as an arcade game, at a time when the world is faced many immense problems that have been explored in a number of excelent 'big issue' documentaries, The King of Kong may very well speak to the human spirit better than any of them, better than many fictional films in fact. I strikes at the very heart of that human urge to succed, to win, to be relevant, and the fact that it concerns something as trivial as Donkey Kong makes it so much easier to connect with the people being followed. Few films I have ever seen manage to hit so effectively at such a fundamental part of human nature.
I love this film. See it, now. And don't download it! This is one that deserves to be supported. Go rent it or go buy it, but SEE it!
