Have you tried baking your card? I've done it a few times with my Nvidia 8800gt.

Thank you scooter, but, when you say "baking" you must be more specific.... Here's how it looks... I think it's dead

Well you are obviously getting video because you are showing a screenshot of gpu-z . Does the trouble just occur when playing or at other times as well ? Could be any number of factors causing problems . If you have the money for new card , never hurts to upgrade , go with that and see if the problem corrects itself . Here is what i use at the moment . Not top of the line card by any means , but it is sufficient for my needs . I get zero vid lag playing on the server . Fps locked at 125 all the time . There seems to be problem with gpu-z reading the memory speed . Under Memory it should read 1954 mhz not 954mhz . The same goes for default . It should read 1902 mhz not 902 mhz. Under Bus Interface it should read PCI-E 2.0 not 1.1.

What makes you think that this card is dead? As Barrel points out, you have video, so it is obviously working. Do you have issues in-game?
Baking the card as Porridge suggests may not be such a great idea depending on what kind of failure you are having. The logic is to heat the card just enough to melt the solder and re-establish the connection between the chip and the contact pads on the board (method is called reflowing). IME this works best on cards that throw garbage lines/text/whatever on to the screen. The hard part is getting the temperature just right...you want to hit 215C - 220C or so for a minute or two. If you go higher (230C etc) you will cook it and parts will start falling off (literally) Not enough time or temp and it wont work. You need a good thermometer and a toaster oven you can trust but that you will never use for food again. If you get it working again by doing this this, sell it and get s new one.
To answer your original question, I recently upgraded to a nvidia GeForce GTX550txi....not the best card on the market, but a good value for what I paid. With this card I can hit a solid 125fps with very little flutter in ET. I am sure that I could get more out of it if I overclocked it or whatever, but I havent bothered since I am more than satisfied with its performance.
BTW, if I am buying new, I only buy Asus products as I have had very good luck with them and never had a failure, just my 2 cents

I'm in the same boat as Mungos ! Pretty sure I just killed my GPU also.. Was browsing online and got some funny colours all of a sudden then vertical lines.. then freeze.. Shut down and took the gpu apart and clean it.. Did have some dust in there but over heating wasnt a problem.. I think its just old. nVidia GTS 320Mb which from memory is about 5 years old.. Anyway ,, anyone got some tips on new cards? My motherboard is the Asus P5k.. You can see the lines forming on boot up on the right hand side Then This !! and finally when windows boots up this is all I get.

Bluey - just to make sure, try another monitor first.

Yeh Quick ,.That is my board.. and Zo, My first thoughts were that it was the monitor, which I wasnt too disappointed about as I figured it would be an excuse to get a bigger monitor, but I was able to boot in safe mode and the monitor was fine so i put it down to the card. So after reading some of the posts in here about cooking up the card, guess what I did ? I BAKED THE CARD !!! lol.. Cant believe it actually worked.. and who in their right mind actually thought of putting a dead card in the oven to fix it .? Genius I say. In any case I'm up and running again but for how long who knows. Its probably temporary so I'm thinking a new rig might be on the cards.(pun intended). Time to start saving.. Oh, I documented the baking of the card on video. I will make a youtube clip shortly to show you all. ps.. Mungos ! I also like your solution

Cool, I suggested this on April 7, and after seeing the pictures I knew it was worth a shot. I also did it 2 or 3 years ago and I'm still on the same card.

Bluey, I'm glad "baking" your card seemed to work for you, but for future reference, just because it didn't mess up in "Safe Mode" , doesn't mean it's not the monitor. When windows boots in "Safe mode" it uses a generic video driver and "mode", that does not use the same resolution or frequency (Hz) as your "Branded" video card driver. So it still "could have been" the monitor.... however it's been my experience that those lines on your screen are typically caused by bad or loose memory on the video card.
