Hi guys, Saw the new server ip and thought i would check it out. Got redirected to the files download section when i tried to connect, so downloaded, unzipped them and copied over to etpub folder. I still cannot connect to the new ip as it is saying it still needs a 0kb file called zz etkey_mjss.pk3 My etkey is in etmain as it should be and is the same 67kb file for the last 5 years or so. Could anyone help with the mysterious 0kb etkey file?

The file in question adds a link to etkey.org in the server kick message, in an attempt to help new players who get on without an ETkey and are subsequently kicked. It seems to be having issues DLing automatically, not sure why. Maybe something to do with the seemingly gratuitous amount of tildes in the filename. I had the same problem yesterday, then today it worked fine. Try DLing it manually, into etpub dir: www.qawclan.com/etpub/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~zz_etkey_mjss.pk3

Thanks for the link but it appears the file there is a winrar zip archive and not a pk3 file which et is looking for when connecting. Needless to say, it doesn`t work when put into the etpub folder. I thought the pk3 file may be within the archive but it isn`t.

pk3 files are zip archives. It might be adding the .rar extension for some reason... various browsers like to add .txt to config files when they are associated with Notepad, perhaps pk3s are associated with WInRAR on your box? Either way, the file linked is most definitely a pk3 file, with the extension .pk3, as it sits on the server. When opened in WinRAR you should see a directory called "ui", and a file called "pb_nocdkey.cfg" If this is true, and renaming the thing to .pk3 doesnt work, then my next guess would be that it is being transferred as ASCII rather than binary... older IE version liked to do that. Havent seen it in years, but you never know. The PITA about that is that the file still LOOKS intact when viewed in a compression program like Pakscape or WinRAR, but since the filesize is slightly altered, the checksums dont match, and you get a wierd loop oif DLing or kicked to the redirect every time. For grins, the file should be 1,296 bytes, MD5 = 7eba3d98f76d10fde4a265c23ba6b59e

Nah it wasn`t the winrar file association because that association doesn`t exist on my pc. However what you said about the browser changing the extension was true. I do use firefox mainly but because EA`s origin software spies on browser links (i play BF3), i have internet explorer 8 set as the default browser. ie 8 decided to save it as a winrar file, firefox doesn`t, but saves it as a pk3 file. So i just pasted the link into firefox. Still doesn`t work though when put into etpub folder. Oh well i`m giving up on it for now, but thanks for your time trying to help. I`ll probably have another go at it someday.

.... Got redirected to the files download section when i tried to connect, so downloaded, unzipped them and copied over to etpub folder... I am not sure what you are describing here. What files download section? The download happens automatically for me on the connect/loading screen, with no need to redirect anywhere. It is small, so easy to download in-game. There is absolutely no need to decompress/unzip anything. As zoh stated, this file is a .pk3 so is handled natively by the et/q3 engine. My suggestion is to open to your etpub folder in explorer, remove any instance of ~~~~zz_etkey_mjss.pk3, start et, and connect to the server. The dl should happen by itself with no need to for any sort of input at all. If this doesn't work, then there is some problem with your config locally. I would create a new player with a stock configuration and try to connect again in this case.

@kstnt - chances are fair to good that once you have DLed the file through Firefox or IE, the DL will work in the game. What I mean is - DL the file through the browser, but either DONT put it in the etpub dir, or immediately delete it, then connect to the server again. 9/10 the auto-DL will work after you have DLed the file via HTTP. I really have no idea why this is. For that matter, I have no idea why it sometimes decides to do this to random people. I see it on customs fairly often with rotation changes - the vast majority of people can DL everything fine, and one or two people get the same problems you are getting now. Then a day later, it works fine for them.... been battling this since 2004! @disco - he is talking about the page that one sees if the redirected DL fails. 99% of the time, no one sees this page cause the redirect works fine. During times of server migration, or when adding new stuff (both of which are going on now) it often happens that some portion of players have trouble with a DL. Actually happens more often on Customs, wince we switch maps on there fairly often. Whenever you are in-game and you see a player has "disconect: acknowledging disconnected DL mode", it means they got sent to the Downloads page on the website. It should also be noted that at this time, due to the aforementioned server migration, the DOwnloads page is out of date. It doesnt actually link to the file being discussed yet... I am not sure I will keep it on there if it keeps giving people problems.

Seemed to work fine tonight Zoh . Approx 20-21 people on . Just one got kicked for that . To be honest i never even saw the dl it happened so fast . Stable , smooth and no lag , at least from my perspective . My ping is slightly higher but it has no noticeable effect .

Ok, just got it fixed and connected ok. All i did was go into the et "options" then "game" and changed "use http/ftp downloads" to yes..Default was no (for me anyway). The other 2 download options were also set to yes. Once again, thanks to you guys for trying to help me out and hopefully this will help anyone else with the same problem.
