Anyone know of some really good Turn-Based RPGs? They are becoming so rare. I need my involved story lines and strategic attacks. My thumb is getting raw from all the "mash the button" games. I've just finished Paper Mario 1 and 2 (Wow.. I'm ultra nerd!) and I want a new toy.

Jeny!
Since you played the Paper Mario games, why don't you try to find an SNES emulator and get Super Mario RPG, now thats a classic! Earthbound is good too, think you'd really like it.

Aren't they making a new version based on FF7? Is that "turn based"?

Do you mean Crisis Core? I don't honestly know
However, if you're going in the step of SNES Emulators, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, FFVI, Super Mario RPG are all super turn based classics.
Unfortunately, if you're superleetsauce and have already played all of those bitchin' games, I'm not 100% on what new GOOD turn based games are coming out.
Xenogears is turnbased right? I hear that's da bomb grizzle.

My brother has to get it and play it and then I have to fly up to Chicago if I wanna play it.
So I won't be playing it for awhile lol.
Anyways, I don't know if this counts as turn based but Tales of Phantasia is ridonkalously good.

Aye, all of the "Tales of..." games are pretty damned good. Got hooked on Symphonia a few years back, great game and story.

Final Fantasy 4 and later are NOT turn based (with the notable exception of FF10) they use the ATB system, which is more real-time than turn based. You can put it in Wait Mode, which gets it as close to turn based as it ever is, but even then it is the passage of real time that determines when you get your "turn", its not a trade off of "I do something, then you do something" like a traditional turn based game. And FF4 didnt have the Job system, 5 did. The Tales games are not even close to turn based. They are all very, very good though so you should play them anyway.

Agreed, FF4 is still my favorite so far. Kain FTW.

I like the ATB system, makes the game more challenging and makes you have to think on your feet.

I am not an RPG player, but I am a Lord of the Rings fan. I thoroughly enjoyed EA's Lord of the Rings: The Third Age which is turn-based and, from what I understand, follows the same combat rules of Japanese-style RPGs ala FFX.
I'm sure RPG veterans may not like the game as it is probably too linear and simplistic for most, but I had a blast and have played through it a number of times. EA has made it as approachable as possible for those that might not like a hardcore RPG. In that they have succeeded. They also were able to make a very beautiful game that is a joy to play for (most) Lord of the Rings fans. Give it a try.

I've played Super Mario and the 7 Stars on my actual Super Nintendo... And I've figured out every secret and all the little hidden treasure boxes... and even the casino... God I love that game. I want some super involved storyline that I can play for more then a day... maybe I'll try the LoTRs one... ^_^

It is not like the FF games, except 10, of which it is an almost perfect clone gameplay wise. And It wins the "most uses of the phrase 'This Land' in any game", ever. I believe the ratio is something like 18 utterances of the phrase every 2.45 seconds during cut scenes, 12 in battle.

Booster was a fun boss to fight as well.

Yeah the Croc dude was awesome, Mallow's psychopath spell was fun to use. I LOVED Geno, he had good attack and great magic.

Another great SNES RPG is Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals. It has good old school turn based action, a good story, and you might find a character that you may recognize in there.

After looking into more, ATB and CTB games are cool too.. I just want a game with a story line that isn't a FPS or that doesn't require button mashing to win. FFX was CTB I think... and the ATB games look cool... I still haven't played FFVII but I can't find a copy of the damned thing either.

I just realised this thread has no mention of SUIKODEN, and that is almost a crime.
possibly THE best J-RPGs ever, and with a great and truely turn based battle system.
Get Suikoden II right now, dont wait for the translation.

Holy crap you havent played FFVII !? Youve got your work cut out for you right there.
After that, play FF Tactics, aka the best game ever made. This is not up for debate. Final Fantasy Tactics is the greatest game that mankind will ever conceive. If you disagree with me, you are wrong wrongity WRONG.
So dont bother arguing.

Hehe just saying that Chrono Trigger was a great game, don't get me wrong I loved Final Fantasy: Tactics as well. The GBA sequel was decent as well, not as epic as the original though.
