I just built this guy: www.thescrewybrewer.com/2010/12/screwys-5-gallon-mash-tun.html(minus the tubing which I did not look carefully enough at and is of a material the directions say not to use) Have it filled with water now to check the seal ... once that seems set and I get the proper tube I'll find a recipe to follow and get started! Luckily there is a a homebrew store not far from me so I should be able to get all the ingredients pretty easily once I decide what to make!

Nice!
What kind of beer are you going to make? What hops?
Or are you going to decide once you get to the store?
I used to have a coworker who brewed his own beer. Pretty hardcore. I could understand about 20% of the brewers vernacular. But, his stuff was great.

I will most likely end up deciding while at the store since I don't really know what all they'll have available vs. whatever recipe I find I might like. Alternatively I may just forego a recipe and rely on the helpfulness of the employees at the store. If that fails I can always just pull something up on my phone and do the best I can with what they have.

Now that the temperature has dropped I'm gearing up to start a batch. I've been doing some browsing trying to find a good recipe/ingredients/instructions to put that converted cooler to work. So far I've pretty much just ended up wishing I'd bought this 100 dollar complete kit on a site I've been browsing for help, but I just really wanted to put that water cooler to use!
Anyways I have now fully embraced my noobness and posted on a homebrew forum for advice on how best to proceed now that I got the thing built ... I'm pretty much just expecting to get replies of 'read this (link)' but hopefully with enough whining someone will take pity and spell things out for me.

As a solution to my waffling over homebrewing equipment and in the interest of a best chance at producing something drinkable, I decided to just buy this: www.amazon.com/Inclusive-Platinum-Homebrew-Brewing-Starter/dp/B016C2JJ0GI came to this decision by finding the above kit on amazon, for which I had a gift card to cover the entire cost. This made the decision far easier I'll have to get some bottles at some point but that's the easiest part, and I'm sure I'll find out some other things I need once the kit arrives and I read the instructions , but I think overall I'm off to a good start! EDIT: Updated the link to amazon, the other one didn't work. Will also add while I'm editing, the kit comes with ingredients for a Pale Ale which I think is supposed to come out around 5% ABV

Got my kit today, almost ready to start brewing! BUT - they forgot to put the 5 gallon brew kettle in the box , WOMP WOMP. Just took a quick phone call to get it resolved though, should have the big ol' pot in a couple days. Considering how easy it was to get in touch with company and the lack of BS in getting them to kindly send me the missing pot I don't really mind. Still waiting for the temperature outside to drop a bit more anyways. Plus I'm secretly hoping they send me some freebies with the kettle

Well I started the batch today ... at the very least I didn't make a mess of the kitchen or pour boiling water on myself, so for now I consider it a win!
I will report back in a month or so when the first bottle is cracked ... my hopes are that I will at least not die by drinking it.

Bottling day! Nice swig of vodka to sanitize the ol' mouth before starting a siphon from fermenting bucket to bottling bucket. Have 64 bottles available, I think the batch should be around 50 or so but we'll see in a bit once I'm done bottling ... more vodka for this tedious part !

Managed 48 bottles , though the last two are a bit iffy, might have a bit of sediment in them from the bottom of the bucket. Oh well, an extra surprise I say!
Gonna give them two weeks for carbonation and crack one on Nov. 9th which is also one of my puppies' birthdays woooooo

Hey Ton, you could try cheese cloth to strain the large sediment. The remaining yeast sediment might be too small to catch!!

Yeah that's a good idea to pour and strain if I remember, which I probably won't. I'm no stranger to drinking a bit of sediment though, even mass produced beers have a bit in there from time to time.

Best beers I've tried have had a great amount of sediment, which increase the taste, making the beer more robust. Just a matter of what you like though.

Not beer - but in another dip into the homebrew world , I just took a half gallon of quality apple juice, poured a glass worth out, dumped in a packet of bakers yeast, and put the cap back on not so tightly. Hoping to get some sort of hard apple cider type thing out of it ... we'll see how it goes

Cracked the first bottle of the homebrew a little while ago ... it tastes like beer! But really, was just worried about lack of carbonation and 'off' flavors, but everything seems to be in order, for this bottle at least
